Magnet Program
The Center for Advanced Studies in Science, Math and Technology
is a specialized magnet program offering Cobb County high school students
a unique and advanced curriculum in science, math, and technology.
The Center attracts students from the Cobb County School District
who have a demonstrated aptitude for one or more of the Center's discipline
areas. Interested students apply to the program during fall of their
eighth grade year and go through a competitive admissions process.
Students chosen to participate in the
program have the opportunity to take an advanced science and math
curriculum, much of which is unavailable in a traditional high school
program. This curriculum is supplemented by an array of high-level
technology courses designed to prepare students for their future post-secondary
education and career endeavors in the twenty-first century. Center
students have the opportunity to culminate their program of study
with advanced research, internships, and a senior project. Visit the
Magnet website for application
materials and information.
Student
Mentorship Class
Career technical mentorship is a class offered for juniors and
seniors on track for graduation.
Students must have a 2.5 minimum GPA, good attendance, minimum
tardies and must not have had Saturday
School , ISS, or
OSS the previous semester.
Students may only mentor twice in their high school career,
and the credits do not count for the technical diploma.
Mentoring is a privilege.
Those students who take this class should be dedicated to the
office in which they serve and represent Wheeler well.
Learning
Links/Tutorials
Students who need extra practice or additional learner
support may attend Learning Links in the Wheeler Media Center
on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 3:30-5:00 PM.
Students must report promptly with their books and notes. They
will not be admitted after 3:30 PM and must stay with the supervising
teachers until dismissal. Students
may NOT attend on days that they serve ISS.
Buses provide a ride home to all students who study during
Learning Links times. Certified
teachers in content areas provide the needed support.
Final
Exams and End Of Course Tests
Comprehensive final exams are given at the end of each
course in every class and count from 10-20% of the final course grade.
Students may NOT be given
a final exam early. In the case
of illness, students may be tested after the scheduled testing period.
It is the responsibility of the student to make arrangements
with his teachers to make up final exams.
Algebra I, Geometry, Ninth Literature,
American Literature, Economics, US History, Biology, and Physical
Science also have state-mandated End-of-Course Tests that count 15%
of the final course grade and are the Final Exams for those courses.
End-of-course test scores will also be posted on transcripts.
EOCT's act as final exams and there are
no other "Final Exams" in those courses. There may be other
unit tests or assignments, but they will not necessarily be worth
15% of the student's grade.
