SUMMER READING PROGRAM
Reading Log Worksheet
The reading
list below is for college-prep level English classes
only. Honors/Gifted students should refer to the list specific
to your grade level (found on the school website by clicking on
the links above).
College
Preparatory Level – Grades 9 through 12
The state mandates that all high school students
should read 1 million words per year. We support a Summer
Reading Program that helps students achieve this goal by
allowing students to choose their own summer reading material.
All students who are registered for college-prep level
classes for the 2008-2009 school year have individual choice
to satisfy the summer reading requirement, following the
guidelines below:
-
All students should read a minimum of 150
pages of text. You will track your reading on the reading
log provided
here.
-
The reading may be fiction or non-fiction and
should be age and grade appropriate.
-
The reading may come from one text or may
come from a combination of texts.
-
Students may choose to read from any of the
following types of materials: novels, books of poetry or
short stories, autobiographies or biographies that tell a
story, graphic novels, or informational magazine articles
about a particular topic of interest (cars, careers, sports,
animals, etc.). If you don’t know where to begin to choose
reading material, you can find links to recommended reading
lists for young adults below.
-
Because you have complete choice, be sure to
choose material that does not conflict with the values
important to you and your family. The topic should be
appropriate to discuss in school.
-
All reading should be completed by the first
day of school on August 11, 2008.
All students will be assessed in regard to their
reading during the first days of school when they present a Book
Talk to the class. This will be one of your first grades of the
semester. More information about Book Talks will be provided to
students when they return to school.
We also encourage students to post comments about
their reading on our Summer Reading Blog. Post comments about
what you have read and review it for other students who may be
looking for a good read.
HAPPY READING!
