Bullying Information

Definition of Bullying

A person is being bullied when he/she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more other persons. Negative action is when a person intentionally inflicts injury or discomfort upon another person, through physical contact, through words or in other ways.

When considering if you/your student is being bullied, please ask yourself the following questions:

  • Is this incident a repeated offense?
  • Is the behavior intended to harm, harass, exclude, or intimidate?
  • Is this one-sided and unfair?

If you’ve answered yes to the above, please complete the reporting form attached to the page and send the completed form to the grade level counselor’s email.

 

Tips for Parents

  1. Take the initiative and talk with your child. Ask for specifics and write them down. If your child does not volunteer information easily, ask indirect and open-ended questions like “Tell me about your day!”
  2. Contact the school immediately by filling out the bullying form and sending it to your/your student’s counselor immediately. Share your written log of the bullying incidences with the teacher, counselor and/or administration
  3. Role-play scenarios to develop resistance skills at home. Concentrate on non-verbal cues such as stance, voice inflections, eye contact, etc. Have your child problem-solve and discuss how humor, ignoring the bully, reacting differently, walking away, avoiding a situation, and reporting the incident might work or not work.
  4. Enroll your child into an extracurricular activity that builds assertiveness, friendship, social or self-defense skills such as martial arts, an athletic team, club, or creative experience that builds confidence.
  5. Investigate if your child is more of a passive or provocative victim. Does your child provoke others when he/she is being bullied? Ask the teacher for his/her insight and suggestions. What behaviors could your child change that could lessen the odds that your child will be bullied?
  6. Be an appropriate role-model and demonstrate fair, consistent, age-appropriate and respectful discipline.
