                       Janice Earnest

JEarnest

Mrs. Janice Earnest teaches writing for our intermediate grades 3-5. She graduated from Mercer University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and has been teaching in Cobb County for 19 years. She started out at the middle school level, but after 3 years, she realized that elementary was where she really wanted to be.

She and her husband, Curt, have been married for 25 years. They have three children - Trey, 20, Gracie, 19, and Micah, 16.  Besides teaching, she has a passion for reading and cooking.

We're glad you're here with us at The Hill, Mrs. Earnest!

The Kitchen Kids Café . . . Serving for a cause!

 Prinipal_restaurant

Mrs. Bowen, Mrs. Ellis and Mrs. Crear enjoy their meal prepared and served by fourth grade Target students.

Dr. Alicea’s fourth grade Target students hosted an Italian restaurant to support Alive Ministries http://www.aliveministriesinc.org and their Save it Forward program. The students were mentored by Loren Martin, owner of West Cobb Diner http://www.westcobbdiner.com/ who visited the classroom to talk about running a restaurant.

Luncheon guests were treated to antipasti, baked ziti, meatballs, salad, and tiramisu cupcakes. Their payment for the luncheon was a bottle of laundry detergent. Alive Ministries provides food and toiletries for approximately 225 families in Cobb County Schools. Students collected over 100 bottles of laundry detergent for families in need!

Georgia Tech Inventure Prize Competition
 ***UPDATE***

 Jessica Gordon Wins
Best 5th Grade Project!

Jessica

Congratulations to Jessica Gordon, 5th grade student in Mrs. Ernstes’ Target class who was awarded 1st place in the 4th Annual Georgia Tech InVenture Prize competition at Georgia Tech on Wed., April 1st.  Four Cobb County elementary schools (Cheatham Hill, Due West, Mountain View and Murdock) piloted this project at the elementary level for Georgia Tech this year.

InVenture Prize requires students to work through the design process to solve a problem by creating an innovative device.  Jessica’s identified problem was babies who have a difficult time being weaned from their pacifiers.  Her research showed that babies who keep their pacifiers for too long of a time period are prone to speech and orthodontia problems, as well as frequent ear infections.  Her device, the Shrinky Binky, has been designed to make the nub incrementally smaller so that the baby no longer desires to use it.

Way to go Jessica!  Congrats also to her coach, Mrs. Nancy Ernstes.

Dr. Alicea graduated from Florida International University with a degree in education and taught in Florida for four years. She moved to Cobb County in 1995 where she taught 5th grade at Compton Elementary.  She joined Cheatham Hill in 1999 as a third grade teacher. She received her gifted endorsement in 2004 and her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from Kennesaw State in 2005.  Dr. Alicea has been teaching Target since the fall of 2006. She received her Education Specialist degree and Ph.D. in Early Childhood Education from Georgia State University.

Dr. Alicea was also honored in February as Staff Member of the Month. She and her husband, Edwin, have been married for 34 years and have one son, Nicholas.

Runner-up was Mrs. Rocio Gonzalez who co-teaches a second grade class with Mrs. Brianne Holcomb. She joined the Cheatham Hill staff 7 years ago.

Please note:

Effective September 7, 2010, students will not be permitted to return to classrooms after 2:45 pm to retrieve forgotten items such as homework, lunch boxes, book bags, etc. Teachers may leave the campus at 2:45 pm, therefore sending students to rooms without someone present is a concern for our staff and for the security of our students. Please be advised that ASP workers and custodians will no longer be able to unlock classrooms for parents or students. Until students become acclimated to this procedure, we will provide daily reminders on the afternoon announcements.
