Cheatham Hill Names 2014 Teacher of the Year!

TOTY2014

Sharon Wood is our new Teacher of the Year!

Sharon has taught first grade at Cheatham Hill for the past 8 years.  Prior to that, she helped open the school as a parent in 1997. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Northern Illinois University and in Elementary Education from Kennesaw State (Education) as well as a Masters in Reading and Mathematics from Walden University.

Sharon and her husband Brian, a systems analyst for Coca Cola, have two children. Son Matthew graduated from Georgia with a degree in ecology and is currently a Peace Corp volunteer in Ecuador. Their daughter, Rebecca, is a junior zoology major at Auburn University (War Eagle!). They also have two ‘babies’ Bella and Cocoa (their rescue mutts).

Sharon says “I am so, so grateful to work in such a fun and rewarding community.  I could not imagine a better way to spend my days.”

Runner-up is Nancy Ernstes who has been teaching Target in Cobb County for 25 years.  She considers Cheatham Hill "home" because her daughters attended school here and she has seen how amazing our school is from a parent volunteer and a teacher perspective. She has been involved with coaching Odyssey of the Mind teams, helping with the Fun Run and is currently a co-sponsor of the Homeless Pets Club with Sharon Wood. Nancy feels extremely blessed to have the opportunity to work with her Target students, their families and amazing co-workers.

An interesting side note . . . . Nancy and Sharon go way back as they led many Cheatham Hill Girl Scout activities when their daughters were best friends in elementary school.  They were also room moms together and enjoy sharing their passion for pets with Homeless Pets Club activities.

Congratulations to both Sharon and Nancy . . . we are SO proud of you both!

Effective September 7, 2010, students will not be permitted to return to classrooms after 2:45 pm to retrieve forgotten items such as homework, lunch boxes, book bags, etc. Teachers may leave the campus at 2:45 pm, therefore sending students to rooms without someone present is a concern for our staff and for the security of our students. Please be advised that ASP workers and custodians will no longer be able to unlock classrooms for parents or students. Until students become acclimated to this procedure, we will provide daily reminders on the afternoon announcements.

NEWS ALERTS

new   2014-2015
    Bus Routes

CCSD Bus Routes for the 2014-2015 school year are now available on the CCSD website www.cobbk12.org.  Runs and maps will be posted at your local school during Sneak-a-Peek for review prior to the first day of school. During the months of August and September, if temperatures reach 90 degrees or higher, students may bring water in containers with a screw on lid to drink on the bus.

Kindergarten and First Grade students along with their parents are invited to ride the bus on Friday morning, August 1, 2014, as a practice run prior to the first day of school on Monday, August 4. Buses will run at regular scheduled morning pick up times and parents/students should be at the bus stop at least 5 minutes early.  Due to limited space, we ask that you limit the number of additional family members riding.  Only school-age children are allowed to ride as our regular buses are not equipped with car seats. The bus will follow the planned route to school, then return back to the bus stop.

If you have any questions, please contact the Transportation Department at 678/594-8000, or email your transportation area supervisor whose email can be found on the Transportation website.

CCRPI

The Georgia Department of Education has released the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) for the school year 2012-2013. The CCRPI is the new statewide accountability system that replaces the federal Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) measure. In spring 2012, Georgia was one of 10 states granted waivers from the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB), which assessed student achievement based on results of standardized state tests such as the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) for elementary and middle schools and the Georgia High School Graduation Tests. The new CCRPI goes beyond a single set of test results, rating schools for student achievement, academic progress over time and for closing the achievement gap for specific student groups. newNew Nutrition Standards
effective 7-1-14

The district is in the process of updating the wellness policy (District Administrative Rule EEE-R Wellness Program) to reflect new federal requirements (Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act of 2010). The new requirements include nutrition standards for all foods sold in schools. Attached you will find a brief summary of the nutrition standards. Please email Mrs. Bowen at Keeli.Bowen@cobbk12.org with any comments, questions, or feedback by March 26th, as these will be shared with district level personnel. Click here to review the new standards . . .

As you have heard, we will no longer be able to sell food from outside vendors at school next year (Chick-fil-a, Bake Sales, etc.) as many of these things do not meet the federal nutritional guidelines. (Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010)

There is also a proposed rule that this new federal guideline will also impact classroom celebrations (birthdays, holidays, etc.). If you have strong feelings either way, the USDA is seeking comments regarding the proposal. The formal 60-day comment period is open now through April 28th, 2014.
