Once you are a school bus driver, ongoing training begins and random Alcohol and Drug Screening are routine. Yearly
In-service and Safety Meetings are mandatory.
A twice daily maintenance check and Monthly Bus Service is required. Fueling and cleaning the bus are the driver's responsibility. Annual physicals must be passed.
Cobb County school bus drivers are assigned Elementary, Middle, and High School routes each morning and afternoon. Exceptions are Pebblebrook Performing Arts,
International Baccalaureate and some Magnet routes.
There is never an end to the ongoing education when it comes to this job. It is never routine. It is a journey, just like that twice daily drive. On Monday morning the driver
is expected to patiently maneuver a transit bus through rush-hour traffic and that afternoon, mediate a dispute and nurse an epidemic of boo-boos.
On Tuesday morning the driver feels like a Clinical Psychologist and in the afternoon, they hear 22 sales pitches for candy, cards, and popcorn.
On Wednesday morning the driver might feel like a gravel inspector/janitor (where did all that dirt come from?) and in the afternoon they realize
that things are just too quiet in the back row. Thursday morning brings seven school science projects with the third graders and Thursday afternoon starts
with 31 seedlings in paper cups that have been watered just before riding the bus. Thank-Goodness-It's-Friday brings students with stories of weekend visits to exotic
places, hugs, and "Oh, is that Johnny's book bag?" after the last student is dropped off.
There is no such thing as "just a school bus driver" in Cobb County.
We are 969 unique individuals with over
6,298 years of cumulative school bus driving experience
(that's 6.5 years for each driver) making sure that YOUR child gets to and from school safely every school day.
