Student Transportation Policy

The Cobb County Board of Education shall assume the responsibility of transporting eligible Cobb County school-age students. All distances affecting student transportation will be measured by, and at the discretion of, the Transportation Department. All routes, including easement walkways, will be defined by the Transportation Department.

Students Eligible For Transportation:
  1. Transportation shall not be provided for elementary students who reside one half (1/2) mile or less from the school.
  2. Bus transportation shall be provided for middle and high school students who live more than one mile from the school in their attendance area. Transportation shall not be provided for middle and high school students who reside within or less than one mile from the school.
  3. Walking distance for students to a bus stop should not exceed five tenths (5/10) of a mile; this may be facilitated by easement walkway.
  4. Bus stops shall be located no less than one tenth (1/10) of a mile apart, except where hazardous conditions warrant shortening distances between stops.

This policy provides the Transportation Supervisor with the framework they need to develop bus routes and stops. Pupil safety criteria must be considered in route and bus stop development.

Basically, all routes and stops are established historically. In other words, based on what has worked in previous years. These are often revised and updated due to growth, decline, zone changes, road closing, overloads, etc. To set up a new stop in new territories, corners are most often used. Home addresses are used in areas where populations are thin and walking distances exceed policy guidelines. Safety is constantly monitored when establishing stops and routes. Furthermore, consistency is a priority in all decisions in an effort to be fair to all students we serve throughout the county.
