Crochet Club
The Crochet Club is a club designed for students who
want to learn how to crochet and make crafts for family and friends.
The members will make scarves, blankets, purses, dollies etc. Open to
all Garrett students. Faculty advisor: Mrs. Tatum.
FCA
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes,
FCA, is the largest Christian sports organization in America. FCA focuses on
serving local communities by equipping, empowering, and encouraging people
to make a difference for Christ. FCA's sports
oriented setting provides a neutral, interdenominational rally point where
our school community can unite as one. At Garrett,
most of our meetings are held the first and third Mondays of each month,
between 4:30-5:30, in the school gymnasium. We use
the first half of our meeting time studying scripture from the Bible.
During this time, we invite teachers and students to
share their testimonies and have a time of prayer. The
last of the meeting is used to promote fellowship. We
offer a small group crochet class with Mrs. Tatum and a variety of sports
games that students may participate in. We also have
students work on community service projects when opportunities arise.
Recently, FCA members packaged up gift bags full of
hygiene products to send out to the victims of the September floods.
Whether working on a community project together or
just hanging out, we are always having a great time in FCA. Come
and join us! Faculty
advisors: Mr. Shook , Ms.
Walth, Ms. Burr, Mrs. Highsmith, or Mrs. Howard.
- FCA will be meeting in the gym during the year on Monday afternoons
from 4:30 - 5:30 PM. Mr. Shook will have a devotion and trivia games.
You can choose to play basketball, soccer, 4 square or jump rope. Come
hang with your friends, play some sports and chill. Please check on our
school's home page or with Mr. Shook on pod 7-1 to see if you will have
a meeting each week.
4H-Going Green Club
The mission/purpose of the 4H club is to teach youth practical life
skills, citizenship, and leadership through “hands-on” learning experiences.
It is our goal to promote the conservation of Mother Earth with
recycling, beautification, and community service.
This is the 1st year that Garrett has sponsored the 4H
Club. We are traveling to Hilton
Head during our spring break. We
also sold candy canes during the holiday season to help diminish the cost.
Faculty advisor: Mrs. Singleton.
Men of Destiny
Garrett
Middle School’s
Men of Destiny Club was
started in 2007 by Dr. Fredrick B. Harris.
Dr. Harris saw a need to address the social needs of young male,
middle school students who were “straddling the fence”; that is, students
who lacked significant male role models to encourage them, who were
performing below their full academic and social potential, or who were
susceptible to the influences of negative peer pressures.
Seeing that need, Dr. Harris formulated a vision and a
mission and purpose statement for a club to address these areas:
-
The Vision for the club is to discover and
develop the inner purpose of each member so that they may realize and
walk into their own personal destiny.
-
The Mission/Purpose is to foster and develop
strong, respectful, and productive young men through character
development, increased self-esteem, and positive role models.
Members of Garrett’s Men of Destiny will strive to become
productive citizens who are aware of who they are, what they want, and
will be capable of attaining whatever goals they may set for themselves.
-
The Motto for
Men of Destiny is
“…Failure is NOT an
Option!” The club
also has a 10-Point Code of Ethics/Personal Pledge that students govern
themselves by, as a part of their club experience.
As a member of
Men of Destiny, students will take part in:
-
Community Service Projects
-
School Beautification Opportunities
-
Group Sporting Events (Hawks, Falcons, etc.)
-
Tutoring Opportunities Assisting Younger
Students
-
Study Halls to Improve Personal Academic
Success, and much more

National Junior Honor Society
Reading Bowl Team
The Reading Bowl Team reads twenty literary award-winning books
selected from the
Georgia Children's Book Award nominees in preparation for competing in
the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB). The team competes head to head
in the District competition with other middle schools from Cobb County.
Teams coming in first or second place in the District competition will move
on to the Regional competition. First place winners will then compete
in the State competition for the championship title. Garrett's Reading
Bowl Team is open to any Garrett Middle School student. For more
information about Helen Ruffin or the HRRB, visit
http://www.cobbk12.org/BelmontHills/hrrb/index.html and

and Mrs. Hobbs.
Student Council
Student Council promotes and provides leadership development
opportunities to prepare and empower student leaders to serve their school
and community. Garrett Student Council leads by planning and
sponsoring a variety of community service and fundraising activities.
Annual activities include, but are not limited to, planting trees for Keep
Cobb Beautiful, donating hats, scarves, gloves and socks from the Garrett
Giving Tree, our Veteran's Day breakfast and program, Valentine Candy Sale,
participating in Global Youth Service Day, and coordinating Spirit Fridays.
We also have some fun by going to the Cagle Dairy Farm Corn Maize, Ice
Skating, and eating out, just to name a few.
Students must complete an application and obtain 2 recommendations: one
from an academic teacher and the other from a connections teacher. A
parent signature must be given on the application to signify that the child
has permission to participate in this club if they are selected. Dues
are $5.00 which helps to cover the cost of the membership pin that will be
given at our end of the banquet in May. Officers are elected from the
8th grade. If there is enough interest and candidates to run for the
office, an election will be held. Otherwise, the advisor will select
or appoint a candidate to the office. The positions for officers are:
President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer. Meetings are held
on Tuesdays after school, usually twice a month. Faculty advisor: Ms.
Burr.
Tri-M
The Tri-M Music Honor Society, a program of MENC: The National Association
for Music Education, recognizes music students for their efforts and
accomplishments in music on the basis of musicianship, scholarship,
character, leadership and service to their school and community.
Garrett's Tri-M Music Honor Society was first chartered in
October of 2003.
The organization’s high
standards serve to challenge students to greater effort, achievement and the
pursuit of excellence.
Tri-M
members are chosen for membership based on participation in a GMS music
class, maintaining A/B Honor Roll grades, and music director recommendation.
Yearly activities include: National Anthem Celebration, Music In Our
Schools Month, providing ushers and refreshments for music concerts,
teachers helpers, Christmas card and courtyard clean-up service projects,
assisting with Orchestra Coda Festival and Night of the Arts, field trips,
guest speakers, and Spring Musicale.
The Spring Musicale music camp scholarship, named in honor of Mr.
Esmer Daniel, sends a GMS music student to UGA Summer Music Camp and is
awarded to the outstanding musicale performer.
Faculty
advisor: Mrs. Anderson.
Umbrella of Elegance
Club Motto: "Respect for ourselves guides our morals; respect for others
guides our manners."
Umbrella of Elegance was founded in 2006 and introduced to
Garrett
Middle School students in
2008. The program curriculum was
created by like-minded teachers and parents in an effort to assist
youth/teen girls in reaching their full potential through age-appropriate
and entertaining etiquette instruction.
We believe that our students need to be able to succeed in the
classroom, home, and in life.
This program is geared towards helping our middle school students develop
social skills that will aid them in becoming productive role models.
Participants will learn to embrace the tried and true traditions of
how young ladies portray themselves, while enhancing distinctive personal
traits that encourage individuality.
This program will focus on students’ social awareness, social
etiquette and adaptation, and social confidence.
It will give an introduction, model, and application of socially
accepted behaviors that will eventually lead to greater opportunities for
our students.
Areas of
advancement include:
Communication; Social Etiquette and
Adaptation; Financial Planning; Career Planning, Exploration and
Preparation; and Wardrobe Essentials.
Participants also engage in
several community service activities throughout the year.
Umbrella of Elegance hosted its
first annual Informational Tea on March 12, 2009.
The group also participated in the Global Youth Services Day in April
2009.The young ladies ventured to the Powder Springs Nursing Home and
assisted the residents in craft painting. Other community service activities
include The Clothing Pantry for the flood victims, participants in the CRCT
school pep rally, Thanksgiving food drive, peer tutoring, school
beautification, and teacher assistants.
Students who are interested in joining this organization
must complete
a registration packet from Ms. Revels. If you
are interested in facilitating a class in any of the above areas, please
contact Ms. Revels, Club advisor, at
camille.revels@cobbk12.org.
