Participates in Relay for Life
Students and staff at Oakwood Digital
Academy joined many throughout the nation for the annual Relay
for Life Cancer Walk and Fundraiser.
The Student Leadership Team at Oakwood
organized a car wash fundraiser that was held on the day of the
walk. More than 20
student volunteers assisted with the car wash and the results
were amazing. A
total of $350.00 was raised for the cause.
Staff at Oakwood also helped to raise funds
by paying a $5 fee to wear jeans on Fridays as well as
participating in a NCAA bracket tournament to raise money for
the cause.
We are excited to announce that a grand
total of $800.00 was raised for Relay for Life.
Everyone here at Oakwood looks forward to participating

Oakwood Digital Academy Hosts Community Blood Drive
On February 29, 2012, Oakwood Digital Academy partnered with the
American Red Cross to host its first annual Blood Drive in the
school gymnasium.
Eight student volunteers worked with the Red Cross in setting up
the blood drive and assisting donors.
Students, staff, and local community members, including thirteen
first time donors, collected 23 units of blood to better serve
the needs of our community. We would like to thank the digital
academy staff and students, our local community members, and our
neighboring school, Fair Oaks Elementary, who participated in
this dynamic community service event. We look forward to hosting
a community blood drive again next year!

Oakwood Digital Academy Visits Grady Hospital
Oakwood Digital Academy’s Post-Secondary Transition Coach, Mr.
Solomon Williams, took students, Lily H. and Porschee S. for a
visit to Grady Hospital on February, 8 2012 to participate in
the “Shadow a Nurse” program.
Both students are interested in becoming Registered
Nurses (RN) and working with trauma patients and infants and
this opportunity gave them up close experience of what being a
nurse will entail.
Both students had a great day of learning as they closely
observed nurses in the trauma division of the hospital.
Students, Jessica C. and Kiauna B. were able to
participate in “Shadow A Nurse” program last semester in their
focus area of Pediatrics.
They observed nurses in the Neo-natal and Pediatric
units.
We are thankful to Grady Hospital for this partnership and thank
all the students who participated and took the first step toward
their career goals.
We look forward to providing this wonderful opportunity for
other student’s at Oakwood next school year.

Oakwood Helps Raise Money for the United Way
On Thursday November 10, 2011, Oakwood High
School held a Pizza Day fundraiser for the United Way.
Pizza and soft drinks were sold during lunch to raise
money for this great cause.
Oakwood’s United Way Ambassador, Mike Chumley, Principal,
Steve Butler and school Secretary, Sue Frislie, worked together
to organize a great fundraising activity for our campus.
A total of $232 was
raised from the pizza sale for the United Way.
Another component to our fundraising activities was to
offer a Jeans Day to staff members.
Any staff member who made a donation was able to wear
jeans on two different Thursdays during October and November.
After totaling all moneys raised from the pizza day and
the jeans day, Oakwood raised a total of $296 for the
United Way.
In keeping with the “Live United” theme, our small campus
composed of several different entities took advantage of this
excellent opportunity to work together for a common cause on the
Oakwood campus.

you through the school. Students wore purple wristbands with the
slogan “Be Cool, Not Cruel,” signed an anti-bullying pledge, and
wore purple on Friday to commemorate their week.
