Let’s look back at some of the accomplishments of 2008:

Osborne HS ranked 951 (top 4% of all high schools) in the Newsweek magazine  Challenge Index of US High Schools, which honors high schools that have done the best job in persuading average students to take college level courses and tests. This listing represented the top 5% of high schools measured in this manner.

Significant improvements made on the Georgia High School Graduation Test (2008 as compared to 2007). 87% of our first time test takers passed the Writing Test! We had the highest percent of English Language Learners (ELLs) in the county pass – 83% for Osborne HS. Osborne ELL students exceed the county average by 8% and the state average by 18%. In addition our Exceptional Education students increased their score by 11% over the previous year.

5 students have completed Calculus II at Georgia Tech using our distance learning program. The classes at Georgia Tech are beamed to Osborne, where the students with the use of video camera, microphones, and large monitors participate in these classes.

Congratulations to Amadu Barrie on winning a Questbridge Scholarship which is a full 4 year scholarship to Emory University.

Our JROTC teams have accomplished major recognition:

The JROTC Academic Team competed against teams from Florida, Georgia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands and won first place earning them a trip to Lexington, Virginia to attend the General George C. Marshall Leadership Symposium.

The JROTC Drill Team took third place in the State in the “Female Squad Standard” category.

The JROTC Raider Team placed third in the State in the Obstacle Course category.

In November the Cardinal Mask (Drama Club) competed in the One Act competition and placed in the top 3 position. We competed against Hillgrove HS, South Paulding, Hiram, and Sprayberry High Schools. In addition Evan Phillips (Freshman) won best actor award, Vanessa Orbe and Iesha Gorman (both Seniors) tied for the best actress award. In addition the Cardinal Mask also won the Best Ensemble award.

Now with the New Year behind us – we have accomplished some great things already in 2009!!

Osborne HS was the Channel 46 First Cool School of 2009. During the first week of school the Channel 46 Cool School crew was at Osborne to record our students in action. Then on Friday January 9, the school doors were opened at 5 AM and hundreds of students poured in to be part of Channel 46’s live broadcast during their morning new show.  With 800 students and many faculty, Osborne gave Channel 46’s viewers the real deal on why Osborne is the Cool. School.

Osborne staff and faculty actively participate in the 2008 United Way fund-raising Campaign raising over $3,600.00, making Osborne the 4th highest high school contributing to this worthwhile cause.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution talked with our Principle Steve Miletto about the challenges our school faces with transient students. Read the entire article at http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/cobb/stories/2009/01/05/transient_students_osborne.html

Osborne takes a leadership role in the 2009 MLK National day of Service. On Friday, January 16 the students in Ms. Thaler’s and Ms. Glendenning’s classes participated in the MLK National Day of Service 2009. Competing against each other for good will and bragging rights, students were charged to “FILL MY CAR.” Donations for Goodwill of clothing, toys, and household goods were brought early in 17 degree weather before school. Exceeding the capacity of both teachers’ cars, the students’ generosity overflowed to fill an assistant principal’s van. Goodwill representatives were excited to receive the donations and were impressed with the student’s commitment to their community.

Osborne and CNN partake in President Obama’s Inauguration.  On Tuesday January 20 (Inauguration Day) big screen televisions were set up in the gym, and the entire student body was invited to watch the swearing in ceremony of our 44th President – Barack Obama. CNN was at the school working with our students to gather video clips which they plan to use in an upcoming special about President Obama.

Don’t forget our Cardinal Fund-raises

We know everyone would like to support the growth and development of the students at Osborne, but for many of us there are financial constraints which limit our ability to make cash donations.. To help overcome these limitations, groups at Osborne are engaged in various fund-raises, which will allow you to acquire your needed products and services you use everyday, while making a donation to Osborne.

Kroger Earning Plus Learning Program allows you to have a donation made with every purchase from Kroger. Either speak to the representative at the Customer Service counter at your local Kroger’s or go to http://www.krogerearningpluslearning.com website. Make sure you register with the Osborne HS Bar Code.

Publix has a customer loyalty program which also allows you to have a donation made with each of your purchases. Our PTSA has the Publix loyalty cards to place on your key ring. When you check out, please have the cashier scan your Publix loyalty card which has Publix making a donation to Osborne.

Doing Internet searches, use Shearchandgive.com for your search engine. Go to http://www.cobb.k12.ga.us/~osborne/Documents/searchandgive.asp for more instructions and register. For every search, the Microsoft Network will donate funds to Osborne.

Tutor.com will not only provide 50 minutes of FREE on-line tutoring service for any student in grades 4-12 in English, math, science or social studies any day and at any time, but they will also donate funds to Osborne for every student who registers at www.tutor.com/osborne. If you want to continue using their services after the introductory 50 minutes, they offer competitive rates. This is a great way to help you child, nephew, niece, cousin, neighbor, friend, church member, etc., be more successful.
