About Pope High School

Alan C. Pope High School was founded in 1987. It is a Standard Public School of the State of Georgia and is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. In 1989, Pope received the prestigious Georgia Blue Ribbon of Excellence in only its second year of operation. The school mascot is the greyhound. The original school colors were Columbia blue and silver grey. In the 1990's Navy and white were added.

Students:
Pope has an enrollment of approximately 1,800 students. The student body is very active, with over 50% participating in athletics and 90% participating in extracurricular activities. Approximately 90% of our graduates go on to college; 80% attend four-year colleges and universities while 10% choose two-year colleges. Pope students achieve high scores on the SAT each year and lead Cobb County in GA High School Graduation Test scores.

Curriculum:
Twenty-three credits are required for graduation at Pope.   We are on a seven (7) period schedule, with students earning a minimum of 7 units of credit per year. The typical schedule contains 4 or 5 core classes and 1 to 2 electives.

Alan C. Pope

Alan Clayton Pope lived in East Cobb before the huge growth of our county. He attended the old Sprayberry High (now Joseph T. Walker School) and later went to a small Alabama college. Once he graduated, he returned to Cobb County to teach and coach. Four years later, his life was cut short in a tragic auto accident.

What made Alan Pope so special that Cobb County named its newest high school after him? Hal Cochran, Alan Pope's high school coach, wrote that "he was that rare individual that met all challenges with 110%."

He gained All-State, All-Region, and All-County recognition in both basketball and baseball. The honors did not end on the playing fields. He was an honor student who had the qualities that teachers, principals, and students look for when selecting an Atlanta Journal Cup recipient or a Mr. Sprayberry.

As a coach, he brought his sense of fairness and caring to the students on his teams and in his classes. He emphasized that a person should believe in himself and do the very best he could.

Alan Pope's goal for each of his players and students was that he become a well-rounded person. Perhaps that should become the primary goal of each graduate of Pope High School.
