A preliminary thesis statement will help to limit the scope of your research. It will give your paper a central focus; however, the thesis may evolve as you continue to work.

A good final thesis should

  • state your main idea in a declarative sentence.
  • limit your subject. establish an investigative, inventive edge.
  • point forward to your conclusion.
  • conform to your notecard evidence and your title.
Example: As an epic hero, Beowulf exhibits physical courage, demonstrates mental agility, and reflects the values of his culture.
