The working bibliography is a list of sources about your topic. Begin to locate sources in the media center. Consult the card catalog, the Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature, vertical files, and online sources. The reference section of the library contains many specialized books, yearbooks, bibliographies, and indexes on a wide range of topics. As you explore these possible sources, compile your working bibliography on 3x5 cards using MLA format. This information will be used when you prepare the Works Cited page.

This card records author, book title, place of publication, Tur publisher, and date of publication. Additionally, it denotes the card catalog call number in the top right corner.

The information recorded on the bibliography card varies depending on the type of source. A magazine article, for example, requires different information for the bibliography card. Refer to the "Preparing the Works Cited Page" for complete information on how to record information for various sources.

Use a separate 3x5 card for each source and write only on one side of the card.

As you continue your research, add to your working bibliography whenever you find a new source.

Note: You might not use all of the sources from your working bibliography. The final Works Cited page should contain only the sources you actually used in the paper.
