TENTH
LITERATURE/COMPOSITION 102B
COURSE DESCRIPTION: this course is designed
for the college-bound student. It will include the study of poetry, non-fiction,
and the novel. Composition will be integrated into the study of the literature.
Various types of essays and their development will be covered, including
a limited research project. Literary terms, vocabulary, and grammar concepts
will be incorporated into the curriculum; additionally, the development
of speaking and listening skills will be included. The use of technology
as a research and writing tool will also be stressed.

II. READING/LITERATURE
- Three
parallel works
- Development
of higher order thinking skills through the study of different genres:
non-fiction, novel (required), poetry (optional)
- Knowledge
of relevant terms for genres studied
III. USAGE/GRAMMAR
- Review
usage, modifier placement, tense shifts, pronoun reference, parallelism,
mechanics (emphasizing internal punctuation), and sentence structure
- Study
stylistic devices such as sentence variety and length and word choice
IV. LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY
- Working
knowledge of SAT format and words
- Understanding
of synonyms, antonyms, analogies, words in context, and other devices
of language
- Expansion
of reading, writing, and speaking vocabulary
V. RESEARCH/TECHNOLOGY
- Application
of research process using annotated bibliography, at least 3 outside
sources, quotes, and paraphrasing and works cited page
- Continued
utilization of available technology for writers and readers
VI. SPEAKING/LISTENING
