TENTH LITERATURE/COMPOSITION 102B

COURSE DESCRIPTION: this course is designed for the college-bound student. It will include the study of poetry, non-fiction, and the novel. Composition will be integrated into the study of the literature. Various types of essays and their development will be covered, including a limited research project. Literary terms, vocabulary, and grammar concepts will be incorporated into the curriculum; additionally, the development of speaking and listening skills will be included. The use of technology as a research and writing tool will also be stressed.

I. WRITING

  3. Study of persuasive essay with emphasis on audience
  4. Introduction to technical writing such as letters, process papers using non-literary topics

II. READING/LITERATURE

  1. Three parallel works
  2. Development of higher order thinking skills through the study of different genres: non-fiction, novel (required), poetry (optional)
  3. Knowledge of relevant terms for genres studied

III. USAGE/GRAMMAR

  1. Review usage, modifier placement, tense shifts, pronoun reference, parallelism, mechanics (emphasizing internal punctuation), and sentence structure
  2. Study stylistic devices such as sentence variety and length and word choice

IV. LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY

  1. Working knowledge of SAT format and words
  2. Understanding of synonyms, antonyms, analogies, words in context, and other devices of language
  3. Expansion of reading, writing, and speaking vocabulary

V. RESEARCH/TECHNOLOGY

  1. Application of research process using annotated bibliography, at least 3 outside sources, quotes, and paraphrasing and works cited page
  2. Continued utilization of available technology for writers and readers

VI. SPEAKING/LISTENING

  1. Development of individual or group presentations
  2. Continued development of active listening, discussion, and notetaking skills
