TENTH LITERATURE/COMPOSITION 102Y

COURSE DESCRIPTION: this course is designed for the college-bound student. It will include the study of mythology with emphasis on Greek and Roman. Drama, poetry, non-fiction, and the novel will also be studied. Composition will be integrated into the study of the literature. Various types of essays and their development will be covered. Literary terms, vocabulary, and grammar concepts will be incorporated into the curriculum; additionally, the development of speaking and listening skills will be included.

  2. READING/LITERATURE
    1. Three parallel works
    2. Development of higher order thinking skills through the study of various mythologies (especially Greek and Roman), drama (including one Shakespearean play), and non-fiction, novel (required), and poetry (optional)
    3. Knowledge of relevant terms for genres studied

     

  3. USAGE/GRAMMAR
    1. Review usage, modifier placement, tense shifts, pronoun reference, parallelism, mechanics
    2. (Emphasizing internal punctuation), and sentence structure

    3. Teach stylistic devices such as sentence variety and length and word choice

     

  4. LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY
    1. Working knowledge of SAT format and words
    2. Understanding of synonyms, antonyms, analogies, words in context, and other devices of language
    3. Expansion of reading, writing, and speaking vocabulary

     

  5. RESEARCH/TECHNOLOGY
    1. Application of research process using one source
    2. Continued utilization of available technology for writers and readers

     

  6. SPEAKING/LISTENING
    1. Development of individual or group presentation
    2. Continued development of active listening, discussion, and note taking skills.
