COURSE
DESCRIPTION: This course is designed for the college-bound student. The
semester will have a balance of composition, grammar, and literature. The
development of vocabulary, speaking, listening, and research skills will
be included.
- WRITING
- Writing
process
- Narrative,
descriptive, expository, persuasive paragraphs developing a topic
sentence using a variety of methods
- Recognition
and use of various sentence types
- Introduction
of essay with thesis statement (one to three five-paragraph compositions)
- Appropriate
voice of writer with n awareness of audience
- Strategies
and related terms for responses to essay test questions
- Avoidance
of fragments, run-ons and comma splices
- READING/LITERATURE
- Recommendation
of three parallel works
- Development
of higher order thinking skills through the study of different genres:
short story and drama
- Knowledge
of relevant terms for genres studied
- USAGE/GRAMMAR
- Review
of parts of speech parts of sentence, basic capitalization, end punctuation,
types of sentences
- Review
of all internal punctuation, subject-verb agreement
- Study
of parallel structure, pronoun-antecedent agreement, usage, manuscript
form
- LANGUAGE/VOCABULARY
- Working
knowledge of SAT format and words
- Understanding
of synonyms, antonyms, analogies, words in context, and other devices
of language
- Expansion
of reading, writing, and speaking vocabulary
- RESEARCH/TECHNOLOGY

to high school mead center and writing lab
- Introduction
of skills necessary for research papers: paraphrasing, direct quotations,
and documentation
