Music Technology Classes

Parents, if you have any concerns about your child’s grade in MT Class, ask them to show you their Edmodo page.  All assignments are submitted in Edmodo.  All work is completed in class.

Students are currently completing their unit on The Art of Foley by adding music and sound effects to an animated movie.  We will begin our focus on classical music composers this week.


8th Grade Advanced Band

We are really proud of the 8th Grade Band and their performance at LGPE!  They did a great job!  Now, we are focused on the 8th Grade Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 9th at 7pm.  Students can expect playing tests over the next few weeks.  We are using this rubric to grade our band playing tests.  The highest grade possible is 40.


Dr. Nichols’ 7th Grade Band

PARENTS, if you are concerned about your child’s band grade, please look at ParentVUE and look for any missing playing tests.  

Beginning this semester, students chose the line from their Band Expressions book that they felt they played well as their first playing test.  We now have a playing test every Thursday.  Students play one line a week.  The starting point was the test they selected at the beginning of the semester.

We are now using this rubric to grade our band playing tests.  The highest grade possible is 40. 

We are currently working through our Band Expressions Book 1 to refine and increase our playing and music reading skills.  Additonally, we are working the Concert F, Bb, Eb, Ab and Chromatic scales every day in class.  Students should have all instruments and supplies everyday. 

Also, we are focused on the 7th Grade Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 10th at 7pm.

END OF YEAR FINAL PLAYING TEST begins on Thursday, May 11 during class.  Students will play the Concert F, Bb, Eb, and Ab scales from memory and sightread a short musical excerpt.  Practice your sightreading at http://sightreadingfactory.com

PARENTS, if you are concerned about your child’s PROGRESS REPORT grade, please make sure they have their Essential Elements Band book, have registered for http://essentialelementsinteractive.com (EEi) and have played the first test on EEi.

Beginning this semester, students chose the line from their Band Expressions book that they felt they played well as their first playing test.  We now have a playing test every Thursday.  Students play one line a week.  The starting point was the test they selected at the beginning of the semester.

We are now using this rubric to grade our band playing tests.  The highest grade possible is 40.

February 13

Parents and Guardians, on Friday, February 17, students can wear the dress of their choice based on the Casual Day Attire guidelines.  The cost is $2.  This money will be used for student and teacher incentives and rewards.  In addition, 25% of the proceeds collected will be given to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

A copy of your students’ 8th grade PSTA test results (8th Grade Only)

IMPORTANT: Parents/Guardians are only asked to sign the manila envelop that was sent home and have their student return the envelop back to their teachers. In 6th grade, students return their cards to their 4th period teacher. 7th and 8th grade students return their envelops to their 6th period teacher

Scoliosis screening 

will occur the week of December 12 for all 6th and 8th grade students. This will be done through connections and they will handle the distribution and collection of letters. Scoliosis video will be shown in homeroom tomorrow. Please be aware that Scoliosis is state mandated and the students must watch the video prior to being screened.

We will be taking a road trip to Dowell and Cheatham Hill Elementary Schools on Dec. 14 to share some holiday music with their students.

The Premier Concert for this year’s 6th Grade Band is on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at 6:30 pm.  Students need to be in their seats at 6:00 pm in the full BAND uniform.  Solid BLACK (dressy) pants, solid BLACK (dressy) shoes, solid BLACK socks, solid BLACK belt and the red Smitha Band shirt.  Its going to be a great night!

Georgia Parent Survey

Parents, please consider completing the Georgia Parent Survey.  This can be done using a personal computer, smartphone or tablet.  Parents that do not have access to the Internet are welcome to come complete the Georgia Parent Survey at school in our Parent Resource Room or the Learning Commons.  All parents are encouraged to participate in the Georgia Parent Survey.  Survey responses are anonymous and will be submitted directly to the Georgia Department of Education for analysis.  Individual data results from the Georgia Parent Survey will not be available to the public and will not be posted online.  The URL address for the Georgia Parent Survey is posted below.

As we begin a new grading period, students are taking the opportunity during Conference Week to explore different composers of Western Art Music.  We are continuing our Composer Research by completing a Powerpoint Presentation on a composer of the students choice.  Projects are being completed in class and due Friday, October 28

The third payment of $100 for the 8th grade Disney Trip is due on Wednesday, November 9.

We are currently selling the 2017 Chick-fil-A Calendar with the Calendar Card!  Each month features a different FREE food item.  You can purchase a $7 calender from any 8th grade student who is attending the Spring 2017 Disney workshop trip.

On Friday night, November 4th, The 8th grade bands will be participating in 8th Grade Night at Osborne High School.  All 8th graders will be attending this fun event!  Permission slips are available here.

PROGRESS REPORTS GO HOME TODAY!

Music Technology Classes

Parents, if you have any concerns about your child’s grade in MT Class, ask them to show you their Edmodo page.  All assignments are submitted in Edmodo.  Missing assignments can be turned in by October 5 for credit on this upcoming report card.

Dr. Nichols’ Music Technology classes have completed the Soundtrack of Your Life, Digital Citizenship, ABA Song form, and musical instrument units.  If a student has not completed any project, they are welcome to come to the band room before school and use a school computer to complete the project.

We are finishing our Video Game Concept unit this week.  Students will create a concept for a new video game, create a theme song for the game in MixCraft, find scenery for their game, create a character, create a powerpoint explaining the game and FINALLY combine all these elements in Mixcraft as a movie about their game.

The deposit of $130 for the 8th grade Disney Trip was due on Friday, Sept. 9.
