ROTC Receives "Silver Star" Community Service with Excellence Award

The Cadets of the Wheeler Air Force JROTC are proud to announce they have Earned the Headquarters AFJROTC "Silver Star" Community Service with Excellence Award for AY 2015-2016. This prestigious award recognizes the Top 5% of 892 units in 49 States, 7 foreign countries, and 2 Protectorates based on service in support of schools and local communities.

AFJROTC HQ recognized the top 47 units worldwide which came from 25 States and 3 foreign countries (Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom). These units/schools had the highest per cadet average of community service hours.  What is also unique about the selection of Wheeler's AFJROTC program is that of the 64 AFJROTC programs/schools in the State of Georgia, Wheeler High AFJROTC was the ONLY Georgia program selected for this award.

Wheeler senior, Sara Shoushtarian, has been awarded the Student Scholar winner of the Georgia Science Teacher Association.  Sara will attend Emory this summer to learn more about cancer research.






Wheeler Robotics Wins!

Kudos to the CircuitRunners, Wheeler High School's Robotics Team, for their 1st place finish at the BEST Competition on October 24 at Pope High School. They not only won the Robot Competition but also the Al George Electronics Award, given to the team with the best use of electronics on the robot, the Most Robust Robot Award and most importantly the BEST Overall Award! They have now qualified to compete at the BEST regional competition at Auburn University on December 5.

Congratulations to Ishan Chadha for being selected as the high school STEM Talk winner for the state. The GA STEM Forum is a really important event for GA educators who are searching for new ways to incorporate STEM into GA schools. He was selected as the STEMtalk winner out of hundreds of submissions and is invited to be a keynote speaker for the luncheon on Oct 27 in Athens. View his STEMtalk.

Wheeler's JROTC Drill Team traveled to Warner Robins, GA on Saturday, September 26, to compete in the Veterans Kickoff Drill Meet against 23 teams from around the State.

Wheeler Recognized as a National PTA School of Excellence

Congratulations Sumana Moudgal!


Congratulations to Sumana Moudgal, one of Wheeler's amazing counselors, who has been selected as a recipient of the 2015 Yale Educator Award.  This award recognizes educators from around the world who inspire and support their students to perform at high levels and to achieve excellence. Ms. Moudgal was nominated for the award by Matthew Coffin then selected as a winner by a committee in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.  Of this year’s 276 nominees, who represent 40 states and 15 countries, 51 teachers and 28 counselors were selected to receive the award.

Wheeler Students perform at National Chinese Language Conference

Congratulations Zoey Hartman!

Congratulations to Zoey Hartman for scoring a perfect 36 on the ACT!  ACT Inc. reports that fewer than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score of 36.  Zoey joins fellow Wheeler senior, Matthew Reese, in achieving the honor this year.

Congratulations Erwin Cai!

Congratulations to Erwin Cai for scoring a perfect 2400 on the SAT!  According to College Board, only 0.02% of students taking the SAT score a perfect 2400.  Way to go Erwin!

Wheeler named as one of America's Most Challenging High Schools

The Washington post published their list of America’s Most Challenging High Schools. Rankings are computed through an index formula that calculates the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and Advanced International Certificate of Education tests given at a school each year, divided by the number of seniors who graduated that year. This year, only 11 percent of the approximately 22,000 U.S. public high schools were placed on this national list.  Wheeler ranked as #1212 in the Nation and #61 in the state of Georgia.

Wheeler Math Team places 3rd at State Competition

Cobb Schools Foundation Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to Elizabeth Blackstock and Joanne Thomas for winning the Cobb Schools Foundation Scholarship.  Each of these young ladies received a $1,000 scholarship.  The scholarships were awarded based on academics, extracurricular activities, leadership, and essay.

Congratulations to Mihir Bellamkonda, Ari Satinoff, and Nathanael Tappin for placing first in the Giant Leap to Mars category at the Conrad Innovation Challenge at the Kennedy Space Center. Congratulations to Ryan Peck

Over Spring Break, Ryan Peck represented Wheeler at the Arcadia Invitational just outside of Los Angeles, California.  This is one of the biggest track meets in the country.  Ryan finished 10th among the distance runners in the country and set the new school record in the 3200m with a time of 9:20.05.  Way to go, Ryan!

Wheeler Selected Most Positive School in Cobb County for Second Year in a Row

For the second year in a row, Positive Athlete Georgia has named Wheeler High School as the Most Positive School in Cobb County!  Additionally, the following students were named as the winners of the Positive Athlete Award for their sport:

State Champions!

Congratulations to the Wheeler Boys Basketball Team for winning the AAAAAA State Championship! Wheeler defeated Pebblebrook in a great game on Saturday, March 7, to win the title.  As of March 2, 2015, Wheeler's team is ranked #7 in the country according to USA Today Rankings and #5 in the country on Maxpreps.  Below are some highlights from the season:

-2015 Georgia AAAAAA State Champions
-2015 Region 5 AAAAAA Champions
-Finished 23-0 in the State of Georgia
-30-2 overall record, losing only to back-to-back state champions West Linn HS in Oregon and California Powerhouse Bishop O’Dowd
-2014 City of Palms Champions (Fort Myers, Florida). This tournament is the #1 High School Basketball Tournament in the country.
-2014 Les Schwab Invitational (Portland, Oregon) 3rd place finish
-Beat the #1 Ranked Team in the Country, Montverde Academy (Florida), ending their 45 game winning streak
-Beat the #2 Ranked Team in the Country, Wesleyan Christian (North Carolina)

In addition, Jaylen Brown was selected to participate in the McDonalds All American Game, the Jordan Brand Game, and has been named a Naismith Finalist.

11 Wheeler students have been selected by the state to participate in the 2015 Governor's Honors Program. More than 3,000 students statewide, representing 1% of all sophomores and juniors in public, private, and home schools, were nominated last fall. In January the state selected  approximately 2,000 semi-finalists who were then invited to attended state-level interviews in January and February where panels of judges determined the  679 finalists.  For four weeks during the summer, this select group of students will participate in challenging and enriching educational experiences at Valdosta State University  in the areas of Math, Communicative Arts, Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts, and Technology.

Wheeler Team Selected as Summit Diplomats in the Conrad Innovation Challenge

Wheeler Magnet Sophomores, Mihir Bellamkonda, Nathanael Tappin and Ari Satinoff, have been selected as Summit Diplomats in the Conrad Innovation Challenge (http://www.conradchallenge.org/).

The Wheeler team is one of ten teams entering the final stages of the Conrad Innovation Challenge in the Giant Leap to Mars category after a worldwide, multi-phase innovation competition that began in Dec 2014.  Prizes include designation as Conrad Scholars at the Conrad Innovation Summit April 9 through 11 at the Kennedy Space Center. Wheeler’s Team Effervesce designed a bioreactor for energy production on a Mars Mission.The Wheeler team’s entry can be found at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14OYdiCcY1U.

Congratulations to Wheeler Robotics!

The weekend of February 27 - March 1, FIRST Robotics Competition Team 1002 competed in the Georgia Southern Classic Regional in Perry, GA!  The team consistently placed among the top ten out of 42 teams from all over the Southeast throughout the 77 qualifying matches, allowing them to advance to the quarterfinals. Our team’s alliance placed 5th overall.  Congratulations to our Wheeler Robotics Club for an incredible showing!

Wheeler named a Georgia AP Honor School for 2015

Wheeler High School was awarded as a 2015 AP STEM ACHIEVEMENT SCHOOL,  2015 AP STEM SCHOOL,  and 2015 AP HUMANITIES SCHOOL

AP STEM Achievement Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earning scores of 3 or higher

AP STEM Schools are schools with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses (AP Calculus AB, AB Calculus BC, AP Statistics, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics B, AP Physics C, AP Computer Science)

AP Humanities Schools are schools with students testing in all of the following AP courses: at least one ELA course, two social science courses, one fine arts course and one world language course.

Wheeler Success at Science Olympiad!

Wheeler High School Science Olympiad had two teams compete at the Georgia Tech Regional Competition this past Saturday.  Wheeler High School Team 1 placed 2nd overall, which earned Wheeler a place at the state competition on March 21, 2015 at Emory.

The combined team medal counts are as follows: 1st place in 7 events
2nd place in 8 events
3rd place in 5 events
4th place in 1 event

The following students won medals at the competition: Vedaja Surapaneni, Jesse Gutierrez, Tori Kraj, Shawn Doss, Abigail Kimber, Sabrena Rutledge, Jerry Yao, Alissa Ji, Karan Achtani, Angela Su, Kar Shin Lin, Katherine Reuben, Martin Cheung, Layla Grazulis, Joshua Mishkin, Suhail Singh, and Erikon Gou.


Wheeler Center for Advanced Studies Magnet students, Karan Achtani, Henrik Boecken, Alissa Ji, and Paul Miloro achieved finalist ranking in the international High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM). HiMCM offers students the opportunity to compete in a team setting using mathematics to present solutions to real-world modeling problems.  Wheeler's team's solution was deemed to be one of the top 40 submissions from more than 700 high school teams from around the world.

Wheeler students attend the 2014-2015 ADDO Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy

On October 9, 2014, Dr. Crooks and Mr. Barnes took a group of Wheeler students to the Chick-Fil-A Leadership Academy.  Chris Darley served as the local Chick-Fil-A Operator Sponsor.  The Fall Kick Off conference took place at McEachern High School.

Wheeler hosts educators from around the country

On October 3, 2014, Wheeler hosted 28 educators from around the country as part of the EdLeader 21 4th annual event in Atlanta.  Visitors included principals and district leaders from schools across the nation.  Wheeler showcased our great programs and students in Culinary Arts, Horticulture, Healthcare Sciences, Video Productions, Magnet Internship/Research, Physics and Robotics, as well as Senior Project and the STEAM Symposium.  Wheeler got outstanding feedback from our visitors.  Great job!!!

Wheeler announced as a Winner in the 2014 STEM Education Awards!!

On September 26, 2014, at the 3rd Annual TAG STEM Education Awards, Wheeler was named the winner in the category of STEM Certified School Outreach.  Wheeler has received this recognition for helping other schools seeking to develop STEM Programs.  For more information about the awards click here.  Congratulations to Wheeler's faculty, students, and parents for all you have done to support so many schools in developing their STEM Programs!

Wheeler Hosted Congressman Tom Price and Superintendent Chris Ragsdale

On Wednesday, September 24, Congressman Tom Price and Superintendent Chris Ragsdale visited Wheeler High School. The tour was inspired by members of our Robotics Team/Circuitrunners who met Congressman Price this summer. More specifically, Zachary Cloud, Harris Minear, Jackson Palmer and Naim Vasaya were instrumental in inviting the Congressman and leading the tour. The goal of the visit was to highlight STEM opportunities at Wheeler. The tour went very well and both gentlemen were very impressed with all of our students. The best part was that the visit was totally initiated by our students. Thank you Congressman Price and Superintendent Ragsdale for taking the time to visit Wheeler High School.

New Wheeler Rock Garden

The Wheeler Horticulture classes created a new Rock Garden on Wheeler's campus this week.  The Rock Garden is located right off the breezeway going from the 3-story building to the Science Building.
