English as a Second Language (ESL)

Classes prepare immigrants to succeed in the workplace and become positive contributors to our community. Classes are also provided for students to study the citizenship process.

Our ESL classes focus primarily on mastery of English through six different levels of communication skills. Students are placed in classes following an assessment. Promotion from level to level is determined by ongoing progress checks and additional assessment measures.

ESL classes are scheduled morning or evenings. A Computer Lab is available for daily independent study.

In addition to the aforementioned classes, we also provide the resources for independent study of the GED® in English and Spanish. Resources include materials to improve Reading and Writing skills. Books and computer programs are the most heavily used of these resources.

Classes are provided at no cost to the student, but regular attendance and progress are monitored to assure the students are meeting the requirements necessary to achieve their goals.

Admissions Testing

Here at Cobb County Adult Ed, we use a combination of two placement tests to determine our ESL student’s level of study. The first is a 50 question multiple choice exam that tests skills across all 6 of our levels of study. There is a one hour time limit on the written test. The second test is an oral exam called BEST Plus and it consists of several computer generated questions geared to test the student’s Listening Comprehension, Language Complexity and Communication skills. There is no time limit on the oral exam, however, test usually take between 5 and 20 minutes to complete. You MUST have completed Orientation to receive an appointment for Testing.
