Human Resources
The Face of Cobb Schools

With more than 15,000 employees, the School District is the largest employer in the county. The Human Resources division is responsible for the recruitment, employment, retention and support of Cobb’s teachers, administrators and support staff. In 2007, Human Resources received more than 60,000 employment applications through its online application system. The District was more than 99 percent staffed on the first day of the 2007-2008 school year.

Human Resources launched the successful new Teach Cobb recruitment campaign in 2007, working to attract the brightest and most qualified educators in the nation to Cobb. The initiative combines intensive college campus recruiting, involvement at professional conferences, print and online advertising and participation in job fairs. The division launched a new Web site, www.teachcobb.com, to serve as a starting point for potential applicants to learn about the School District.

Teach Cobb also made use of Teacher Recruiters, an elite group of Cobb educators who share their experiences with potential applicants. The Teach Cobb campaign was present at more than 50 job fairs in 2007. The District hired 1,300 teachers from among 9,500 applicants.
Human Resources also puts a special focus on showing appreciation for outstanding employees.

The annual Classified Employee of the Year luncheon honors support professionals throughout the District, selecting special award winners for each academic level and from the Transportation department. Each year, the School District and the Cobb Chamber of Commerce partner to honor teachers at every school through a week-long celebration called Give Our Schools A Hand. The District also designates a Teacher of the Year from each academic level and selects one for the District honor (see below). The Ed Voyles Automotive Group provided an exciting new incentive for the first time in 2007, awarding a one-year lease on a new car to each of the three Teachers of the Year.

Following the retirement of Chief Human Resources Officer Dr. Randy Reece in fall 2007, the District announced the hiring of Dr. Donald Dunnigan as CHRO in January 2008. Dr. Dunnigan is a veteran educator with experience in many Georgia school systems. More information about Human Resources is available at www.cobbk12.org/hr.

District Teacher of the Year - Gina Coss

Each year, the Cobb County School District recognizes its top educators with its Teacher of the Year honors. Congratulations to Gina Coss of Sedalia Park Elementary, Bob Hague of Lovinggood Middle School and Beverly Titlow of Walton High School, the 2007-2008 Teachers of the Year. Mrs. Coss was selected for the district-wide honor in
September 2007.

Gina Coss began her career not with books and blackboards, but with stocks and bonds. After several years working in brokerage firms, Mrs. Coss turned her energy from building profits to building young minds as a teacher. “I decided to become what I believe I was meant to be: a teacher,” said Mrs. Coss. She joined the staff at Sedalia Park in 2001 and has never looked back. She feels her strengths as a teacher are in developing good work ethics in her elementary students, emphasizing responsibility, accountability and honesty. “The more ownership students take of their learning, the more their learning will cement and increase,” said Mrs. Coss. Gina Coss lives in Marietta with her husband and two daughters.
