Accelerated Reader Question & Answers

The Accelerated Reader program is a school wide computerized reading incentive program that allows our Kindergarten and First grade students to improve reading comprehension. Students conference with their teachers before beginning Accelerated Reader testing each AR period. Each student has individual goals to achieve. Students read books within their reading level and take AR quizzes once they are ready. At the end of the year, the students who have achieved their goals 1 out of 2 times in Kindergarten (with one period being the final AR period) or 3 out of 4 times in First Grade will be invited to our AR Beach Party. The AR students who have exceeded those goals will receive a special prize at the final awards program. Please see your child's teacher to discuss your child's individual goals. At this formative age, it is imperative that students receive assistance from their parents in order to achieve their goals.

      Question

How many books does my child have to read to reach his/ her goal?

      Answer

Each student’s goals are set after an individual conference with the classroom teacher. The minimum goal for each grade is as follows: Kindergarten students are expected to read and take at least one AR test per two weeks while First Grade students are expected to take at least one AR test per week. The average primary book is worth .5 points. Therefore, if your child’s goal is 2 points, he/she will have to take and pass 4 AR quizzes with 100% accuracy. Please contact your child’s teacher at the beginning of Each AR period to identify your child’s goals.

      Question

When does each AR period begin and end?

      Answer

      Second AR Period

      Third AR Period

      Fourth AR Period

      Question

How/where can we find Accelerated Reader books?

      Answer

Accelerated Reader books are regular books- they simply have quizzes to go along with the books. Students may check out AR books from the media center, check them out at the public library, or look for titles in their home library. For example, most Dr. Seuss books, Arthur books, and Clifford books are AR books. The Powder Springs and Sweetwater Public Libraries have binders with a list of available AR quizzes, but they are not as updated as our website. To see a current list of Accelerated reader quizzes from home, visit http://www.arbookfind.com/

Students will need a signed permission slip in order to take a quiz on a book from home or the public library. Please click here for a permission slip:  English      Spanish

      Question

Which books should my child take AR tests on?
