FOR CCSD TEACHERS ONLY

Course work in the identification and education of children with special education needs is required for all teaching fields, Educational Leadership, Media Specialist, and School Counseling as mandated by Georgia House Bill 671. CCSD offers the Exceptional Child course to help our educators meet this certification requirement.

The Exceptional child is a fifty-hour, 5 PLU course. It is blended, meaning some of the course work is online. The major purpose of this course is to provide general understandings of the characteristics of students with exceptionalities and how this information is used in the instructional planning for all learners. This course is to prepare all teachers to become contributing participants in multidisciplinary teams that provide pre-referral strategies, screening and identification data, recommendations for educational services and the strategies needed to provide appropriate instruction for all students in the classroom setting. This requires an understanding of the legislative and legal foundations of current special education programming. As schools look to inclusive programming for students with disabilities, the role of the general education teacher continues to expand. The teacher must master a wide repertoire of instructional interventions and accommodations to meet a broader continuum of learning differences.

This course is offered multiple times each school year. Registration is required.
