Elementary and Secondary Education Act
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides parents with the option to seek enrollment of their children in another
designated school if their home school has not met Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) targets in the same content area for three consecutive
years. This requirement is called the "ESEA School Choice Option".
CCSD schools have received this year's AYP results and district leaders have determined which schools will be offered as receiver
schools for those schools that must offer choice. Schools will only provide enrollment options if they do not meet their Adequate
Yearly Progress (AYP) targets in the same content area for the third consecutive year. Once a school achieves the AYP standard for
two consecutive years, the school is no longer required to participate in the choice option and any transportation associated
with that choice is eliminated although parents of students on transfer may continue to transport their student until he/she
completes that level of schooling. At that time, the student must return to his/her home school at the next level.
Beginning Tuesday, July 26th, parents of students in schools that must offer choice will receive a phone call regarding important
deadlines and application procedures. The same information is posted below along with the application. Optional parent meetings
will be hosted by sending schools to fully explain the application process and to address any questions regarding the approval process.
Letters of explanation will be mailed to parents of students in schools that must offer choice on Monday, July 25th. Only
students who are enrolled in CCSD schools are eligible to participate in the ESEA (formerly NCLB) School Choice Option. Late
applications will not be accepted.
Returning Students
The choice selection period for a student enrolled in any Cobb County School during 2010-2011 will run from July 26th through August 9th.
New Students to CCSD
The ESEA public school choice process for students enrolling in Cobb schools for the first time will run from July 26th – August
29th. Students must be enrolled in their home school before an application can be submitted for ESEA choice.
