Paraprofessionals GD 9/1/04

RATIONALE/OBJECTIVE:

The paraprofessionals will be used in a manner consistent with the standards under which the paraprofessional program is funded. Furthermore, the use of paraprofessionals will be such as to directly enhance the instruction provided to students. Paraprofessionals will have responsibility for students as prescribed by law and will serve to assist in the implementation of instructional decisions of the certified instructional personnel of the school system.
 
RULE:

A. It is the responsibility of the school principal to ensure that paraprofessionals are assigned duties as prescribed by law and that they do not assume the role or status of the professional teacher.

B. Paraprofessionals, as defined by the job description, will:

1. be assigned the authority of "in loco parentis" while performing assigned duties provided they hold a valid paraprofessional license.

2. work with individuals or groups of students under the supervision of classroom teachers or other certified employees.

3. assist the classroom teacher in the instruction of students.

C. All paraprofessionals must be utilized in a manner consistent with state law and the funding source.

D. Paraprofessionals who do not have a degree in education must complete fifty clock hours of approved inservice training the first calendar year of employment. Ten of these hours must be earned within the first thirty working days of employment. An additional twenty clock hours must be earned every five years thereafter for continued employment. Employees who hold a degree in education must complete ten clock hours of approved inservice the first thirty working days of employment and an additional twenty hours must be earned every five years thereafter for continued employment.
