Pilot Projects (See Form) ICA 9/1/04


RATIONALE/OBJECTIVE:

(A). A pilot program/course is any program/course which deviates from the approved existing curriculum. Local school staff members who desire to implement programs other than those officially adopted by the Cobb County Board of Education must request permission from School Improvement to implement these on a pilot basis. Pilot programs/courses may also be initiated and implemented by School Improvement.

(B). Pilot materials are any materials which would be used in lieu of the adopted material for the majority of any one class being instructed. Local school staff members who desire to use materials other than those officially adopted by the Cobb County Board of Education must request approval for the use of pilot materials from School Improvement. Pilot materials may also be initiated and implemented by School Improvement.

(C). All pilot programs/courses and materials will be evaluated at specific intervals in order to determine their continuance, termination or status change as outlined in the regulations.

RULE:

(1) Pilot project applications initiated by local schools will be considered for approval only during the two-year period prior to the scheduled year of the countywide textbook adoption for the affected area. However, School Improvement may initiate pilot projects without regard to the textbook adoption cycle when needs arise. Written approval for changes shall be required from the of the appropriate supervisor and director.

(a) Upon approval of the principal, an outline of the proposed pilot project must be submitted to the curriculum area supervisor and director to determine the feasibility and possible timeline for implementation and completion of the project.

(b) The school receiving permission in the spring to conduct a pilot project must also submit an evaluation form completed by the teacher(s) involved, the department chairperson, the principal, and the subject area supervisor. This evaluation must be returned to the curriculum area supervisor upon completion of the project.

(c) If approved by School Improvement, appropriate action will be taken to incorporate the project into the approved curriculum.
