Six additional Cobb County schools have made Adequate Yearly Progress following summer testing
and graduation, according to reports released by the Georgia Department of Education. The updated results mean that 95 percent of Cobb schools (108 of 114) have now made AYP for 2009, up from 90 percent when the
initial reports were released in July. All of the District’s 25 middle schools have now made AYP, along with 97 percent of elementary schools (66 of 68) and 88 percent of high schools (14 of 16).
Since July 2008,
the percentage of Cobb County schools making Adequate Yearly Progress has improved from 81 percent to 95 percent. Only six of the district’s 114 schools did not make AYP in 2009. One of the six, the Devereux
Center, is not managed by the Cobb County School District but is required by the state to be included with Cobb’s overall results.
“This is great news for our school district and reaffirms our focus on student
performance,” said Superintendent Fred Sanderson. “The fact that all of our middle schools made AYP really stands out. Over the past several years the district has looked closely at middle school programs and our
teachers have worked hard to implement the state’s new curriculum standards. We are closely monitoring student progress throughout the school year, and those efforts are paying off.”
Additional Cobb schools
making AYP based on summer results are Compton Elementary, Campbell Middle, Lindley Middle, Smitha Middle and Campbell High, as well as the Imagine International Academy of Mableton. Compton Elementary, Campbell
Middle and Lindley Middle each join Floyd Middle in coming off of the Needs Improvement status after making AYP for the second consecutive year in 2009. Cooper, Griffin and Tapp middle schools were among the
schools announced in July as making AYP and could come off the Needs Improvement list by making AYP again in 2009-2010.
