AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination
The
AVID program is an academic support program designed to raise
the achievement of middle school and high school students. This
college readiness system focuses on underserved students in
middle range academic performance. By enrolling students in a
unique AVID elective course and providing tutor support, AVID
aims to challenge students so that they are prepared for college
success. AVID instruction emphasizes writing, inquiry,
collaboration, and reading directed toward developing students’
higher-level thinking skills. AVID challenges students to take
the next step in academic rigor and enroll in honors and
Advanced Placement courses. As AVID becomes increasingly
integrated into a school’s instructional system, faculty realize
the capacity of all students to become critical thinkers and
academic achievers.
