AVID: Advancement Via Individual Determination
The AVID program is a support program designed to boost middle and high school students in the academic middle toward a higher level of college preparation. By enrolling students in a unique AVID elective course and providing tutor support, AVID aims to challenge students so that they are prepared for college success. AVID instruction emphasizes writing, inquiry, collaboration, and reading directed toward developing students’ higher-level thinking skills. AVID challenges students to take the next step in academic rigor and enroll in honors and Advanced Placement courses. As AVID becomes increasingly integrated into a school’s instructional system, faculty realize the capacity of all students to become critical thinkers and academic achievers. Since its initial implementation in four Cobb schools in 2001, AVID has expanded to 32 Cobb schools. Ninety-nine percent of the District’s 1,382 AVID students are on track for acceptance to four-year colleges upon graduation. AVID programs are evaluated annually on rigorous national standards.
