What is PBIS?

PBIS is an evidence-based, data-driven framework proven to reduce disciplinary incidents, increase a school’s sense of safety, enhance school climate, and support improved academic outcomes. More than 19,000 schools nationwide are implementing PBIS and saving countless instructional hours otherwise lost to discipline. The premise of PBIS is that continual teaching, combined with acknowledgement or feedback of positive student behavior, will reduce unnecessary discipline and promote a climate of greater productivity, safety and learning.

PBIS schools apply a multi-tiered approach to prevention, using disciplinary data and principles of behavior analysis to develop school-wide, targeted and individualized interventions and supports to improve school climate for all students. PBIS is not a new intervention package. It is the application of a behaviorally based system approach to enhance the capacity of schools, families, and communities to design effective environments that improve the fit between research-validated practices and the environments in which teaching and learning occurs. The focus is on creating and sustaining school environments that improve lifestyle results (personal, health, social, academic, work, etc.).

The Cobb County School District has begun the process of bringing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to schools in the district. The following school PBIS teams attended the three day training (provided by the DOE at no cost) in the principles of PBIS and are actively implementing the PBIS framework:

Pine Mountain MS
Tapp MS
Campbell HS Hawthorne Center
of HAVEN Academy


Additional CCSD schools have also expressed interest in PBIS and are preparing for the next round of training that will occur in the spring of 2014.
