The
Cobb County Board of Education is currently conducting a
search for superintendent. Following a process of
reviewing applications from qualified candidates and
scheduling interviews, the Board hopes to have a new
superintendent in place as soon as possible. However,
the Board intends to take as much time as is necessary
to find the right candidate.
To assist in the search, the Board conducted a focus
group on Oct. 10, 2005 to help identify public sentiment
as to the most desirable qualifications, qualities and
attributes of an effective leader. The results of the
focus group, and the online survey below, will assist
the Board as it narrows the list of potential
candidates.
A group of 24 randomly selected Cobb County citizens –
parents, business-people, teachers, and others – took
part in the focus group. School board members have
participated in similar leadership quality training
previously, but were not present for the focus group.
The focus group results were presented to the school
board at its Oct. 12, 2005 public meeting. Later, board
members reviewed the results in executive session during
a discussion of the superintendent search.
The school board also invited the entire Cobb County
community to provide input. A simple survey was placed
on the cobbk12.org Web site asking the public to
prioritize the various characteristics, qualifications
and attributes of an effective leader, especially as
they pertain to a superintendent of a large suburban
school system such as Cobb County. The survey closed on
Sunday Oct. 23, 2005 and the results were compiled and
presented to the Board of Education to be used in the
superintendent search process. We recommend that you
read the focus group background and activities memo
linked below and then view both the Focus Group Results
and the Online Survey Results.
Thank you for your input,
Cobb County Board of Education
