Provide support and enrich the educational environment of our school by fostering effective literacy development with our students.  We strive to improve and enrich their academic careers through information education and promote lifelong learning by encouraging students' natural curiosity in understanding the world around them.

What are the Media Center hours?

The Media Center is open each school day from 7:15 a.m. until 2:45 p.m. Students may come during the school day to return and check out books, search Destiny, the Cobb Digital Library/Mackin Via or take Accelerated Reader tests.

How many books can I check out?

Students in Grades 3-5 may check out up to 3 books at one time. Grades 1 and 2 may check out up to 2 books. Kindergarteners may have one book at a time. Books are checked out for two weeks. Overdue books must be returned before a student can check out additional books.

Accelerated Reader Program (AR)

Accelerated Reader is a Chalker “incentive” program to encourage and reward students who read. The computer program tests student’s reading comprehension through multiple – choice questions. The computer grades the test and the student has immediate feedback of the number of questions correctly answered and the points awarded. This optional program offers supplemental reading comprehension practice. Per Cobb County policy, the results of an AR test are not included in the report card.

How Does It Work?

The Chalker Media Center books are labeled with a yellow ‘star” sticker, a red AR sticker, or a colored dot on the spine.

A label on the front of the book identifies the reading level and point value of the book. Students are encouraged to read on their grade level OR within one grade level of their actual ability. The student checks out the book, carefully reads it and takes the test. The computer cumulatively records the titles and the number of points earned. Students take a test only once on a particular title. The point value assigned to each book is based on length and difficulty.

What are the Accelerated Reader incentives?

Students who reach the "Wall of Fame" will have their picture placed on the Wall of Fame and receive a prize. Students who reach the "Extreme Wall" will have their picture on the Extreme Wall, their name on our Extreme Wall Plaque, and receive a prize. All students who reach the Wall of Fame and Extreme Wall will have their picture shown on our morning announcements and be invited to an end of the year celebration.
