Our Mission: The mission
of the Cobb County School District is to guarantee a quality
educational program for all students in a challenging, secure
environment. We, as professional, caring educators, will provide a
relevant, integrated curriculum. Our students will become critical
thinkers who are knowledgeable, skillful and responsible, and who can
succeed as life-long learners in a richly diverse society.
The Cobb County School District is the second largest school system in
Georgia and among the 30th largest in the United States with a current
enrollment of 102,161. Its student population grows by nearly 2,500
each year, and with more than 13,800 full-time employees, nearly 8,600
of whom are classroom teachers and other certified personnel, the
School District is the largest employer in the county.
Continuing a strong tradition of excellence in education, student
achievement remains the primary focus within the School District. This
is evident in the “report cards” that annually evaluate the
performance of Georgia’s schools and school districts, such as the
ones issued by the Georgia Public Policy Foundation and the Georgia
Department of Education.
All Cobb County schools are accredited by the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools. Cobb schools have earned 16 National Blue
Ribbon-No Child Left Behind School awards and 33 Georgia Schools of
Excellence awards. In addition, individual schools, staff members and
students receive numerous local, state and national awards each year.
Parental and community involvement is a hallmark in the District, as
demonstrated through 100 percent PTA participation in most schools,
the addition of School Councils, and the Partners in Education Program
— a joint effort with the Cobb Chamber of Commerce — which supports
school-business partnerships in every Cobb school. The School District
has more than 692 business partners.
Cobb students consistently score above the national average on
norm-referenced tests. In 2003, 5,029, or 83 percent of Cobb seniors
took the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT), achieving a combined
average score of 1038, while the national combined average score was
1026, and the state average score was 984. In addition, Walton High
School’s average score of 1141 is the highest among metro Atlanta
public high schools.
The School District has three charter schools and five magnet programs
including the International Baccalaureate Programme (Campbell High
School), the Advanced Mathematics and Science Academy (Kennesaw
Mountain High School), the Center for Excellence in Performing Arts
(Pebblebrook High School), the Academy of Research and Medical Science
(South Cobb High School), and the Center for Advanced Studies in
Science, Mathematics and Technology (Wheeler High School).
Cobb County faculty members have an average of 11 years of experience,
and 68 percent have advanced degrees. As of 2003, Cobb County is home
to 64 National Board Certified Teachers, a designation that is one of
the highest national achievements in the education profession.
The Cobb County School District is a growing and caring community
where education comes first and excellence in education is at the
forefront.
