Spotlight On
Board Certified
Teachers in Cobb

An impressive 26 Cobb County educators earned the status of National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs), a prestigious credential in the education field, in 2004.

Considered one of education’s top honors, earning National Board Certification takes nearly a year to complete with rigorous assessments of the candidates throughout the process. Established in 1993 by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, national certification provides advanced evaluation of experienced educators and complements the state certification process. Teachers can gain national certification in their select teaching areas including language arts, early childhood, mathematics, and science, among others.

“The District is very proud of its newest National Board Certified Teachers,” said Superintendent Joe Redden. “Earning this prestigious credential demonstrates the Cobb County educators’ dedication to education and to our students.”

Human Resources
The Face of Cobb Schools

With more than 14,000 employees in the Cobb County School District, the goal of the Human Resources department is to professionally serve these "everyday heroes" at every opportunity. District employees are called "everyday heroes" because they have chosen to make children their top priority. Whether they keep the schools clean and safe, drive the buses that take children to and from school, serve them meals in the cafeteria, or teach them the lessons they'll need to be successful members of society, each of our employees is an important member of the Cobb County School District family. Each of them is helping to improve the lives and futures of our children —- heroes every day.

Human Resources is responsible for recruiting, retaining, developing, and properly assigning a highly skilled workforce to more than 100 sites throughout Cobb County. To handle the high volume of candidates interested in employment, an online application system was implemented. STAR, Strategic Application Recruitment System, will enhance the recruitment of certified, classified, administrative, and substitute teacher applicants.

Human Resources strives to establish a friendly, welcome environment and maintain high standards of quality customer service. This improved when the Employment and Employee Relations, Compensation, and Benefits departments relocated to additional office space, which is better equipped to handle new employee processing sessions, meetings, personnel records, and day-to-day operations. Human Resources believes large organizations do not have to be cold and impersonal, and each customer contact is an opportunity to reinforce employee value and retain their service with the District.

Each member of the Human Resources staff takes his or her job responsibility very seriously, knowing that providing professional service, prompt, accurate information and efficient, effective value to the taxpayers of Cobb County is of critical importance.

Operations
Ensuring a Safe School Community

Department of Public Safety - The District’s Department of Public Safety is responsible for ensuring that all Cobb County Schools are provided with a safe learning environment. The department includes 34 certified Law Enforcement Officers, who patrol Cobb’s high school and middle school campuses.

The department also includes a K-9 unit, which consists of a drug detection dog and an explosives detection dog. The department works in a coordinated effort with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office and other local law enforcement agencies within the county.

Construction -
The Construction Department oversees all Cobb County School District building projects throughout the school system. During SPLOST I (Special Purpose Local Options Sales Tax), CCSD completed over 1,000 construction projects.

In September 2003, the voters of Cobb County approved SPLOST II. As a result of that vote, seven new schools (one high school, three middle schools, and three primary schools) are currently under construction.  In addition, several schools are undergoing modifications, additions, and/or renovations to existing structures.  Barber Middle School, McCall Primary School, Riverside Primary School, and Austell Primary School will be opened at the beginning of the 2005-2006 school year.  Hillgrove High School, West Cobb Middle School, and Northwest Middle School will open the fall of 2006.

To ensure taxpayer dollars are spent effectively and efficiently, the Construction Department works directly with The Facility Group, the district's Program Manager.

Facility Use - The Facility Use department has the responsibility of coordinating use of school facilities, both inside areas and fields, by community groups.

In the past year, the department processed approximately 900 contracts for 465 different groups, including youth and adult sports leagues, homeowners’ associations, churches, language schools, boy scouts and girl scouts, police and fire departments, civic groups, and numerous others.
