Are Cobb Students Nationally Competitive?

Students in Cobb County are tested with several national measures. The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills, the SAT, and Advanced Placement Exams all give a national perspective on student achievement in the District.

SAT scores in Cobb County are consistently higher than the national average.

When compared to the national average on the SAT, Cobb students consistently outperform their peers. For the past 15 years, the District has had verbal scores higher than the national average. Total scores for 2005 were 19 points above the national average.

When compared to their counterparts in other metro districts, Cobb students had higher scores than all the surrounding districts except for Fayette, Fulton, Decatur, and Cherokee.

Cobb Elementary & Middle School students continue to outperform their national peers on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills

Cobb test scores have remained above the national average in all areas, for all grades tested, each year the test has been administered. Composite scores for 2004-2005 showed that third and fifth grade students were above their national peers by 15-20 points. Middle school students scored higher than their national peers by 11 points.

Instructional Value Added As A Result of Attendance in Cobb County School District

Average percentile rank scores were generally higher than the overall district scores and the national averages in Reading, Language, and Mathematics on the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills.

Third grade students who remain in the system for their primary years have higher percentile rank scores than those of the nation and the district as a whole. On the ITBS administered in the fall of 2004, overall achievement (composite scores) was 27 points higher than the national average and 7 points higher than the District average.

At the middle school level, overall achievement (composite) was highest for students who remained in Cobb schools for their entire middle school education. Composite scores for these students were 14 points higher than the national average and 5 points higher than the District average
