District Teacher
of the Year

Jennifer Dawson
Lost Mountain Middle

Each year, the Cobb County School District recognizes its top educators with its Teacher of the Year honors. Congratulations to Paul DeVigne of Shallowford Falls Elementary, Jennifer Dawson of Lost Mountain Middle, and Denease McCullough of Harrison High, the 2006-2007 Teachers of the Year. Ms. Dawson was selected forthe district-wide honor.

Ms. Dawson says that teaching “found her,” and began growing her passion for the profession while working as a youth minister with children of Vietnamese refugees. She changed her career path in 2000, teaching sixth grade on a provisional basis while she attained her certification.
Jennifer focuses on finding ways to make Social Studies applicable to middle school students, whether the subject is civics or geography.

“From dollar stores, to quirky news stories, to historical dates, I relish finding ways to engage and excite students in a subject many before associated with ‘old dead people’ or endless worksheets,” she said. “Words can’t adequately express how much I love my job. Inspiring students to engage critically and dually in the wider world is indescribable.”

Human Resources
The Face of Cobb Schools
With more than 14,000 employees in the Cobb County School District, the goal of the Human Resources department is to professionally serve these “everyday heroes” at every opportunity. District employees are called “everyday heroes” because they have chosen to make children their top priority.

Whether they keep the schools clean and safe, drive the buses that take children to and from school, serve them meals in the cafeteria, or teach them the lessons they’ll need to be successful members of society, each of our employees is an important member of the Cobb County School District family.

Human Resources is responsible for recruiting, retaining, developing, and properly assigning a highly skilled workforce to more than 100 sites throughout Cobb County. Interested applicants use the Strategic Application Recruitment System (STAR) on-line application process on the Human Resources web site to review vacancy postings and apply for positions.

Human Resources strives to establish a friendly, welcome environment and maintain high standards of quality customer service. Our Employment and Employee Relations, Compensation, and Benefits departments are all co-located to facilitate new employee paperwork processing and other day-to-day operations.
