Articulation
Articulation from elementary school
to middle school and middle school to high school is a continuous challenge. It
is important that all music teachers be aware of the total K-12 music curriculum
and the opportunities for students available at each level.
It is imperative that each music teacher know other music teachers within
his/her individual feeder cluster pattern/area. Opportunities should be made for
keeping in touch with each other on a regular basis. When feasible,
consideration should be given to sharing concert programs, visiting classrooms
and rehearsals, sharing curriculum materials and music, and other activities
that will enable the teacher and the students to stay intellectually and
musically alert. This is a very effective way to gain new ideas and techniques which will benefit your
own teaching.
Articulation from middle to high is essential to the success of the band,
chorus, and orchestra programs. Placement of students in high school performing
ensembles must be done on the basis of current information as to the student’s
on-going progress or by audition. It is imperative that high school directors
receive names of their future freshmen in the spring from each middle school
director.
