Welcome to First Grade at Frey! We are planning an exciting and educational year. Reading and writing are two key components of the first grade program.
This year we are using Open Court Phonics, which has proved successful in improving phonemic awareness and reading abilities. This program reviews letter sounds and introduces vowel and consonant blends.
We use the Wright Group program for our guided reading instruction. We will read with small groups based on their academic needs, which allows us to challenge each student at his or her level. Reading at home strongly reinforces good reading skills.
Our writing program involves students mastering a basic "No Excuse" word list. These words are frequently used in everyday reading and writing. Our goal is for each first grader to be able to spell the following list of words correctly in his or her own writing.
Word List:
the he and for was of
a on to are in as is with
you his that they it at
Our Math program involves completing a daily class calendar that incorporates a variety of problem solving skills such as place value, counting money, telling time, graphing, and skip counting. Also, we will be using Partner Games to instill problem solving abilities. Many hands-on activities using manipulatives will reinforce mathematical concepts.
Social Studies, Science, and Health will be integrated into our language arts and math programs throughout the year.
