The Cobb Standardized Testing Program includes both
norm-referenced and curriculum-based tests. Norm-referenced tests,
used extensively in school systems across the nation, show how well
students are doing in comparison to other students across the country,
while curriculum-based tests measure students' understanding of the
subject matter itself.
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills and Stanford Achievement Test
The ITBS are norm-referenced tests and are given to a large representative group of students
across the nation. Their scores are then used to set the standards by which all other scores
are compared. The scores reported are in percentiles which show how these schools compared with
other schools across the nation. For example, if a percentile score was 66, that school achieved
a score that was as high or higher than 66 percent of the other schools in the nation.
First grade students only are administered the ITBS.
In Spring 2001, the Stanford Achievement Test (Stanford 9), another norm-referenced test,
was administered for the first time to students in grades second through eighth. Students are tested
in the areas of reading, language, mathematics, science, social studies, listening, spelling, using
information, and thinking skills. Like the ITBS, scores are presented in percentiles. Percentile
scores for both the ITBS and the Stanford 9 range from a low of 1 to a high of 99, with 77-99
considered above average; 23-76 average; and 1-22 below average.
Criterion-Referenced Competency Test
The Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) is a state-developed, curriculum-based
assessment that measures how well students are learning the Georgia Revised Quality Core Curriculum.
Testing is done in three areas: reading, English/language arts, and mathematics. In Spring 2001,
only fourth, sixth, and eighth grade students were administered the CRCT, but beginning in Spring
2002, all students in first through eighth grades will take the test. Scores are reported in a
range of 150 to 450.
Georgia High School Graduation Test
The Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT), one requirement for earning a high school diploma,
is administered to all 11th grade students in the spring. Scores are reported in Average Scale
Scores (SS), and show the percent of students passing each subject area. A SS of 500 is passing.
Students are given five opportunities to pass the test before the end of the 12th grade.
SAT and ACT
The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) and the American College Testing Program (ACT) measure how well
a student has learned the skills needed to succeed in college. The SAT is divided into verbal and
mathematics components, and the ACT is divided into four testing components - English, math,
reading, and science.
