Employment - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are your Vacancies?

Vacancies are listed on our Human Resources Employment Page. On this page you will see four categories; Certified, Classified, Administrative, and Substitute Teacher. The Administrative and Certified categories are generally for trained educators with at least a bachelor’s degree; the other categories are generally for people with non-educator backgrounds.

2. How do I apply for a job?

You will need to submit an application for employment. Applications are available on our Human Resources Employment Page.

3. What is the difference between Certified and Classified jobs?

Certified jobs are those that require a Teaching, Service or Leadership certificate. Classified jobs are all other jobs that require no certificate or a Georgia Paraprofessional certificate from the Professional Standards Commission.

4. Will I be contacted for a job interview?

First, we review your application. If you are qualified for a position(s), your application will be referred to the principal or supervisor with the vacancy. The principal/supervisor will contact you for an interview. Due to the large volume of qualified applicants, not everyone referred to the principal or supervisor will be interviewed.

5. What is the status of my application?

You will receive an e-mail upon submission of your application to confirm receipt. If you meet the qualifications for the position(s) for which you applied, your name will be referred to hiring officials. While your application is active, hiring officials will also be able to query and find your application if your skills meet their needs.

6. I submitted an application, but have not yet heard back. Who should I contact?

Unfortunately, due to the large volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond personally to all applicants. Should your qualification match our staffing needs, we will contact you directly.

7. How do I become certified to teach?

The Georgia Professional Standards Commission is the licensing agency for the State of Georgia. To teach in a public school in Georgia, a certificate (license) is required. The Georgia Professional Standard Commission’s website is www.gapsc.com. Please access the website to acquire detailed information regarding certification requirements and/or an application for evaluation. Check Rules and Regulation under the certification drop down menu. Cobb County accepts applications from candidates who hold or are eligible (completed all requirements, passed all tests by date of employment) for a professional, renewable certificate in Georgia or another state.

8. Do you hire people of Provisional certificates?

Beginning Fall 06-07, Cobb County will accept applications for candidates who hold or are eligible for a provisional certificate only in the area of Special Education. To be considered for possible vacancies, Special Education candidates must submit their PRAXIS I scores or verify the exemption, a letter from the College/University that they have been accepted to attend. and the PRAXIS II scores in the content areas they are seeking employment, as needed.

9. What is GTAPP?

The Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program is an “alternative” route to certification. Go to www.mresa.org for details. Cobb County only accepts applications from candidates in math and science who have been accepted into the program and completed the 50 hours course, “Essentials of Effective Teaching.”
