Academic Team

Mission/Purpose: Participation in Academic Team matches and a generally good time seeing what we know.

Anime

Mission/Purpose:  Discuss Japanese anime and culture; watch anime

ARETE (LHS Literary Magazine)

Mission/Purpose:  To publish a literary magazine from Lassiter students' submissions of poetry, fiction, and nonfiction.

Requirements: Teacher Recommendation, Interest in Creative Writing, Positive Attitude towards other Club Members

Asian Awareness Association (AAA)

Mission/Purpose:  To promote awareness of Asian cultures

Beta Club

Mission/Purpose: Honor Society and Service Club

Book Club

Mission/Purpose: To encourage reading and intellectual discussion outside of the classroom as recreation

Requirements: Must be a student at Lassiter High School

Dues: No dues up front. Students are asked to find copies of the books chosen by the club for reading. Libraries and sharing are encouraged!

Meets: 7:45 one Thursday a month

Dance Team

Mission/Purpose: School Spirit – perform at home football and basketball games, pep rallies, homecoming parade, and other appropriate venues; competition

Debate Team

Mission/Purpose: The Debate team promotes debate and speech and provides students opportunities for practice and competition at the state and national levels throughout the year in argumentative debate, speech writing, current events, public speaking, and dramatic and humorous interpretation.

Diverse Society

Mission/Purpose: Promote positive interactions among diverse groups through educational activities.

Elan of Epsilon Sigma Alpha International

French Club

Mission/Purpose: The mission of the French Club is to encourage interest in the study of the French language and culture by providing students with opportunities to both learn and socialize in a relaxed setting.

Sponsor:  Linda Farmer

Meets: Students meet once a month to discuss French Club business, sample French delicacies, and play games in the target language.

Past/Planned Activities:  Several times throughout the school year, French Club arranges authentic French dinners at local restaurants so that members can familiarized themselves with the superb cuisine of France. In a more serious vein, French Club works on philanthropic projects during the school year by providing club members as workers and donating money from club dues to school charity projects. Also, on a national level, French Club collects gifts for hospital-bound children at St. Jude in Memphis, Tennessee.

 

French Honor Society

Mission/Purpose: The aim of this organization is to stimulate interest in the study of French, to promote high standards of scholarship, to reward scholastic achievements, to create enthusiasm for and an understanding of Francophone culture and civilization, to promote and perpetuate international friendship, to reward efforts toward furthering solidarity in the French-speaking world.

German Club

Mission/Purpose: Promote the use and understanding of the German language and culture and a willingness to serve the community

German Honor Society

Interact

Mission/Purpose: Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young people ages 14-18. The program gives young people an opportunity to participate in fun, meaningful service projects while developing leadership skills and meeting new friends.

Requirements:  Fill out a medical release form, pick up a calendar, turn in a permission slip for any trips you want to attend.  Attend meetings for updates, an dif absent, check our blog at http://lassiterinteractclub.blogspot.com/ for news.

Dues: $20.00 to LHS;  Optional T-Shirt = $10.00

Meets: 7:40 a.m. Monday mornings in Room 1208 (science building).

Past/Planned Activities: There are many small groups within Interact and you may want to focus on one of our many activities or even run one of the activities. These change over time but some of the small groups include: one-on-one pen pals with Calvary Children’s Home, students who eat lunch occasionally at the special ed table, face-painters, leukemia penny collecting, etc. You can come to the meetings to enjoy guest speakers and morning activities or you can just check the door to attend the field trips There are no requirements as far as GPA, just hat you want to lend a helping hand and have a great time doing it!  Everyone is welcome!

 

Key Club

Mission/Purpose: Key Club is the oldest and largest service program for high school students. What makes Key Club so successful is the fact that it is a student-led organization that teaches leadership through serving others. Members of the Kiwanis International family, Key Club members build themselves as they build their schools and communities.

Requirements: Key Club membership should be open to any student who desires to become a leader in his/her school and community and wishes to provide service to others. Each member of an individual Key Club must be willing to perform at least 50 hours of combined service to his/her home, school, and community annually.

Laureate

Mission/Purpose: The Laureate is a monthly student newspaper 100% supported by advertisements.  Our mission is to reveal student news, from a student perspective, written, laid-out and published by students.

Sponsors: Todd Henry

Requirements: spring application process and/or prior newspaper experience

Meets: The Laureate staff and editors meet once a day as an elective class.  Assignments often require “field” interviews and on-site photography.  One week per month students may be required to work together after school to meet publication deadlines

Past/Planned Activities: selling ads, writing articles pre-planned via a story-board and collaborative process, editing articles, learning AP style, learning InDesign professional publishing software, improving our photography skills (microlessons), stuffing and distributing papers.

LSC

Mission/Purpose: To create a student government that serves both the faculty & the students at Lassiter HS

Requirements: All students are elected by their peers to serve on student council

Dues: $25.00

Meets: Wednesdays @ 3:30

Past/Planned Activities: Homecoming week events including drive-in movie, powder puff, the parade, pep rallies , homecoming court, homecoming dance, hall decorating contest, annual clothes drive. Council members also assist with open house, Freshman Sunday, freshman folders, helping teachers during work weeks, Spring Fling

 

Math Team (Varsity & JV)

Mission/Purpose: To provide an enriching atmosphere for talented math students who want to participate in math competitions throughout Cobb County, Georgia, and the southeast

Sponsors: Don Slater, Debbie Poss, Jean Linner,  and Lisa Chase

Requirements: Attendance and participation in practices

Meets: Practices on Mondays after school (3:35 – 4:30) for Varsity (in room 216) and Junior Varsity (in room 210). Tournaments are held on selected Mondays or Saturdays from September through April

Past/Planned Activities: Writing and hosting the Lassiter Math Tournament (on the first Saturday in December); participation in 12-15 math competitions throughout the school year

 

Mu Alpha Theta

Mission/Purpose: The purpose of this organization is to promote scholarship in and enjoyment and understanding of mathematics amongst students of Lassiter High School

Sponsors: Gloria Lassiter and Lisa Chase

Requirements: Students must be taking Algebra II or higher; must have a G. P. A. of 3.0 or higher in mathematics. Each applicant must provide (1) recommendation from a teacher in the LHS Math Dept and (1) recommendation from a teacher who is not a member of the LHS Math Dept

Dues: $20.00/year

Meets: Every other Thursday at 7:45 a. m. in the theater

Past/Planned Activities: (1) Provide support for Lassiter Math Tournament, (2) Math tutoring on Tuesday mornings, (3) Provide assistance to math teachers as requested, (4) Provide upkeep and landscaping for the math hall and immediate outside area.

MUN

Mission/Purpose: To expose students to international issues, debate and parliamentary process by engaging in a realistic United Nations simulation.

Odyssey of the Mind

Mission/Purpose: Promotes critical thinking/problem solving, teamwork, special skills

Sponsors: Jean Linner

Requirements: Regular participation

Dues:  $40 when selected for a team, expenses for materials and travel to competition as necessary

Meets: after school on dates selected by students (vary according to student schedules)

Past/Planned Activities: Meetings at school, participation in regional competition, participation at state and/or World Finals if the team advances

 

 

PAC

Mission/Purpose: Non-partisan political organization chartered to encourage an informed electorate

Sponsors: Claire G. Nichols

Requirements: An interest in politics in general and voter education specifically. Students must be willing to interact and exchange ideas in a non-partisan arena.  Debate is encouraged.

Dues: $20-25 and will include a t-shirt

Meets: 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month, 3:30-4:30pm

Past/Planned Activities: voter registration drive, county wide HS student forum

 

 

Peer Helper

Mission/Purpose: We Provide Education, Activities, and Mediation to Promote Healthy Peer Relationships and Promote Community Involvement.

Sponsors: Nancy Watts

Requirements: All Peer Helpers must strive to be ideal role models and genuinely want to help others.  Our club represents a diverse student population with a variety of race and cultural backgrounds as well as various academic and extra-curricular interests.  We seek members who are empathetic listeners as well as nonjudgmental with strong moral values and character.  Active, dedicated participation is essential.

Dues: $20

Meets: TBA

Past/Planned Activities: Peer Helpers provide listening, support, information, and referral to help address a variety of peer issues.  Peer Helpers also assist students and staff with 8th Grade Articulation activities, 9th Grade Advisement, student orientation, information dissemination and workshops on peer issues, fundraising, and community service projects.  Activities we have sponsored include: The Salvation Army Stocking Drive, American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Bullying Prevention and Intervention, mentoring at Garrison Mill Elementary, Eager To Be Drug Free Day at surrounding elementary schools, Christmas toy and clothes drive, and peer academic tutoring

 

Robotics Team

Mission/Purpose: To promote teamwork, leadership and problem solving through robotics and robotic competitions with other schools and organizations.

Requirements: Interest in robotics/technology/engineering.

Science Honor Society

Mission/Purpose: SNHA seeks to encourage and recognize scientific and intellectual thought as well as to advance both the student’s and community’s knowledge of science.

Sponsors: Waynette Helms, Dianne Adams

Requirements: A member must be a junior or senior at Lassiter who has been enrolled in at least one honor or AP science course in their freshmen/sophomore years and must take at least one honor or AP science course in both their junior and senior years.  A grade of 85 or higher must have been earned in all science courses and the overall G.P.A. of 3.3 must be maintained.  For additional requirements, please speak with a sponsor.

Dues:  $15.00
Meets: Third Wednesday morning of each month at 7:30 a.m.

 

Spanish Club

Mission/Purpose:  To promote the study and use of the Spanish language and to foster appreciation of Hispanic cultures.  

Sponsors: Arlene Mendez

Requirements: An interest in Spanish language and Hispanic culture and a willingness to make a contribution to the school and community.

Dues: $20.00/year

Meets: TBD (probably 2X monthly before school)

Past/Planned Activities: Help host the international festival, adoption of school grounds, Spanish language movie showings, and more in development.

 

Spanish Honor Society

Mission/Purpose: : The Spanish National Honor Society aims to promote the Spanish language and culture, to provide opportunities for students who excel academically and especially in Spanish to experience the Hispanic culture and to use the language, and to engage in community service both at school and in the community

Sponsors: Michael Raburn

Requirements: Students must be juniors or seniors in Spanish IV or V, and must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.8 and all A’s (with the possible exception of one B) in Spanish classes during high school in order to join this honor society. Students who meet these requirements will receive personal invitations to join at the beginning of the academic year

Dues: $25.00 yearly

Meets: Every second Tuesday, 8:00 am

Past/Planned Activities: Teaching Spanish in elementary after-school programs, coordinating the international festival, volunteering at a soup kitchen and in a program reading to young Hispanic students, eating at Latino restaurants, creative writing and artistic expression in the Spanish Language, tutoring high school students, and more

 

Step Team

Mission/Purpose: To allow students to learn different routines and show the skill they have at different performances

Sponsors: 1st sergeant Lorenzo Cox, Sharon Spann

Requirements: attend practices, performances as required, and assist with any other activities the team may sponsor

Dues: $15.00

Meets: Wednesdays 4:00pm, and as needed for other performances

Past/Planned Activities: Performances throughout the year included pep rallies, halftime performances, and several competitions

 

Tri-M

Mission/Purpose: The Tri-M Music Honor Society is a program of the National Association for Music Education (MENC) designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel in music and leadership

Sponsors: TBA

Requirements: 1) Enrollment for at least 1 year in chorus, band, or orchestra, 2) Current enrollment in the “top” band, chorus, or orchestra, 3) Minimum 3.0 overall GPA, with an A average in music performance classes, 4) Excellent character, good attitude towards teachers and fellow students, and cooperative and helpful in their classes and school, 5) Involvement in extra-curricular music ensembles, competitions, auditions, honors, etc

Dues: $10.00

Meets: every other week on a day and time to be determined by the membership
