End-of-Year Dates to Consider
Listed below are some suggested dates to consider when planning for the end of the school year.
It is always a recommendation to discuss library media center plans with
school administration and library media committee. There are other factors
to be considered when setting the exact timeline for your school, such as
the following:
- The end-of-year timeline should be adjusted to account for local
school factors, especially if summer projects (i.e. carpeting, painting, roofing) are scheduled.
- Every school is required to perform a full collection inventory
every two years, and the book collection should be inventoried every
year. Circulation does not necessarily need to be closed to perform
inventory, but the task of performing inventory does need to be the
primary focus of both the library media specialist and the library media
paraprofessional while the inventory is in progress. Some schools may
wish to perform the inventory earlier in the year (e.g. during CRCT
testing, during first semester final exams for high schools on block
schedule) in order to extend circulation and instruction beyond the
dates recommended below.
- Review the Library Statistics report in Destiny (Reports > Library > Statistics) to
help with planning the school's end-of-year timeline. Based on the
"snapshot" provided in this report, schools may need to adjust the
amount of time allowed for inventory, the dates items will be due, when and how notices need to be sent,
special strategies for collecting fines, etc.
- Keep in mind that the library media center is not closed during this
time; the goal is to continue to serve the needs of the school while
completing the necessary and required end-of-year tasks.
