Georgia has joined with 47 other states to develop a set of common curriculum standards for grades K-12, and these standards will be implemented beginning with the 2012-2013 school year. Georgia's implementation will be known as the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards, or CCGPS.
The implementation of these standards present an incredible opportunity for library media programs, but we will need to be proactive in order to take advantage of it. Cobb's Media Leadership Team (MLT) has been investigating the new standards to determine how they will impact library media programs, and they will be leading the way in helping us prepare for the changes.
The district library media education department will be working with MLT to develop more specific training on the CCGPS later in the school year, but MLT has already created a wiki page with materials to help library media specialists begin learning about these changes now. (New resources will be added periodically throughout the year, so keep checking back. As you begin learning about the Common Core resources, you can add your own resources to the page to share with others.)
