The Cobb County Board of Education is
delighted to announce Jill Kalina has been appointed acting
superintendent for the District. The Board immediately will
commence with hiring a search firm to conduct a national
search for a superintendent. In the meantime, we are truly
fortunate to have someone of Ms. Kalina’s skills and
experience available and willing to step in and lead the
District during this transitional period.
Ms. Kalina is known from her 35 years of
service to the school district as a teacher, school
administrator, principal, executive director of high schools,
and, most recently, as chief academic officer. She is a native
of Florida who earned her bachelors degree in business from
Florida State University. She subsequently earned masters in
business education and specialist in educational leadership
degrees from Georgia State University.
Ms. Kalina began her career in Cobb as a teacher at Campbell
High School. Later she moved to South Cobb High School,
becoming an administrator in 1981. In 1991, she moved to
Harrison as associate principal and took on the tremendous -
but rewarding - responsibility of helping to open a new high
school. She was named principal of Harrison in 1998. In 2001,
Ms. Kalina moved to the central office as executive director
of high schools, became an area assistant superintendent (Area
4) in 2002, and was appointed chief academic officer in 2004.
Her goals include turning the focus of the District and the
community back to what defines Cobb County schools - students
and student achievement. She already has been very involved
with schools directing AYP improvement efforts and will
continue to guide that process.
