Pickett’s Mill Elementary and Allatoona
High To Open 2008
The Cobb County Board of Education has
selected names for the final two schools to be built under the
SPLOST II program. During its April 12, 2005 work session, the
school board chose the names Pickett’s Mill Elementary
and Allatoona High School for the new facilities to be
built in northwest Cobb. The names are historically
significant to the Kennesaw and Acworth area. Both schools are
scheduled to open in August 2008.
Pickett’s Mill Elementary will be
constructed on Old Stilesboro Road in Kennesaw, adjacent to
Allatoona High. The school name is derived from the nearby
Pickett’s Mill Battlefield Historic Site, one of the most
well-preserved Civil War battlefields in Georgia. The
Pickett’s Mill name is shared with a number of neighborhoods
that will feed into the new school.
Allatoona High is named for its general
proximity to the 12,000 acres of Allatoona Lake, a man-made
lake run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Allatoona Lake
was authorized in the early 1940s and was created on the site
of what once was the small town of Allatoona, immediately
north of Acworth and flooded during the lake’s creation.
Allatoona Lake is one of the most visited lakes in Georgia,
according to Georgia Outdoor News. The new high school is
located on Highway 92 in Kennesaw, adjacent to Pickett’s Mill
Elementary.
Separate committees were organized for each
school to review potential names and background information
and present recommendations to the Board of Education. Bullard
Elementary principal Sharon Hardin chaired the 15-person
naming committee for the elementary school. She was joined by
parents, community members and principals from Ford, Frey,
Lewis and Vaughan elementary schools. Harrison High School
principal Donnie Griggers, along with North Cobb principal
Gary Boling, Kennesaw Mountain principal Sue Gunderman, and
six parents and community members from each of the three
schools served as representatives for the high school
committee. The name selection process took place in accordance
with Board of Education Rule FDC, which outlines the process
of soliciting public input for potential names and the
establishment of the committees to make final recommendations
to the Board.
More information about these new
facilities, including addresses, maps, and SPLOST funding, are
available on the District web site at
