Megan
Paternostro, kindergarten teacher at Due West Elementary, was
named Georgia's American Star of Teaching for 2006 by the U.S.
Department of Education at a surprise assembly August 28. The
award was presented to Megan by USDOE representative Carolyn
Snowbarger and U.S. Representative Tom Price. Principal Carla
Jones, her family and a gymnasium full of Due West students
and faculty were on hand for the assembly, which included a
student choral performance dedicated to Mrs. Paternostro.
Due West parent Susan Piotrowski nominated Paternostro for the
honor, citing her hands-on, interactive lessons that help
kindergarten students learn and grow. One teacher from each
state and the District of Columbia is granted the American
Star of Teaching award each year, as part of a federal
initiative to recognize outstanding teachers that work to
improve student achievement.
Congratulations to Megan Paternostro, the 2006 Georgia
American Star of Teaching!
