District to Move Technology Support In-House

November 30, 2006
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

The Cobb County School District is announcing a plan to move technology support and services in-house. Since April 2003, the District has outsourced its technology needs to L-3 Communications. The District will not renew its contract with L-3 Communications, allowing for a gradual transition of technology services back in-house to be fully completed by July 1, 2007.

“L-3 Communications has done a great job of meeting our technology needs for the past three years,” said Superintendent Fred Sanderson. “But moving forward our needs have shifted toward more local control of our technology systems, especially with major improvement projects upcoming. This is a business decision that gives the District the flexibility and oversight it needs for now and for the future.”

Sanderson said that the components of the business decision include: 1) More control over technology operations as the District restructures and begins a district-wide refresh of outdated equipment; 2) More direct accountability; and 3) The potential for cost savings.

As part of the transition plan, the District will hire selected employees from L-3 Communications to continue providing technology support for the District’s schools and other facilities.

“The transition will be invisible to schools and District staff,” said Chief Technology Officer Chris Ragsdale. “Through the transition and beyond, schools will continue to receive the highest level of support and service.”
