Cobb County’s Gina Coss
Named One Of 10 Finalists
for State Teacher of the Year
Gina
Coss, fifth grade teacher at Sedalia Park Elementary School
and the 2007-08 Cobb County School District Teacher of the
Year, has been named one of 10 finalists for the 2009
Georgia Teacher of the Year by State Superintendent of
Schools Kathy Cox. Mrs. Coss is the third consecutive Cobb
County District Teacher of the Year to be included among the
state finalists, following Jennifer Dawson of Lost Mountain
Middle School in 2007 and Diana Lossner of Pope High School
in 2006.
Mrs. Coss was selected from among 141
district winners throughout Georgia who applied for the
statewide honor. Her application was reviewed and chosen by
a panel of educators (including past Georgia Teachers of the
Year), business leaders and staff members from the
Department of Education. The Department of Education’s panel
of judges will visit Sedalia Park in late February to
observe and interview Mrs. Coss. The state winner will be
announced during a special banquet May 9 at the Georgia
Aquarium.
The winner of the Georgia Teacher of the
Year honor takes a one-year sabbatical from the classroom,
during which he or she acts as a spokesperson for the state
and conducts staff development activities for fellow
educators. The winner is also nominated for the National
Teacher of the Year award. More information about the
Georgia Teacher of the Year program is available at
www.doe.k12.ga.us.
Information about Gina Coss and the Cobb
County School District is available on the District Web site
at www.cobbk12.org.
