Read, Compete, Achieve!
1st Annual Cobb County School District
Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
February 3, 2007
The first annual Cobb County School District Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition will take place on Saturday, February 3, 2007 at R.L. Osborne High School in Marietta. The competition is all about recognizing readers and sharing the love of reading. In the competition students compete on factual knowledge of twenty books. Elementary and middle school teams read and compete using the Georgia Book Award title list while high school students read and compete using the Georgia Peach Teen Reader's Choice nominee list. Although a team of five students will compete against another team of five students at the same level (for example, high school students compete against other high school students) the student that buzzes in the quickest will be called upon to answer the question without assistance from teammates.
History of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl
Helen Ruffin was the media specialist at Skyhaven Elementary School in DeKalb County until her retirement in 1992. To encourage her students to read, she created a competition game based on the Georgia Children's Book Award nominees. The idea took hold in DeKalb County and grew to a statewide competition in 2003.
