Storytime &
Book Exchange
Third Grade students visit the
Library frequently for book exchange and
occasionally for storytimes. Sope Creek Elementary
participates in the
Georgia Book Award program every year, and
very often the students will hear stories from
the
nominee list.
Research &
Library Skills
In addition to
occasional storytimes, third grade students also
receive information literacy instruction.
These lessons occur in conjunction with
classroom projects and units.
In the Spring,
the Library Media Specialist worked with two
third grade classes to develop a Georgia
Jigsaw project about Georgia habitats.
Each student became an expert in one of
Georgia's five eco-regions and
researched with
other habitat experts. They recorded their
information in a
Georgia Habitat brochure and transferred
their research to a
puzzle piece.
They then assembled in different groups
to
present their findings as experts.
The
groups will assemble their puzzle pieces to
reveal the shape of the state of
Georgia.

In the fall,
several of the third grade science teachers
conducted a science unit on Pond
Animals. They used the steps of the
Big6™ to guide
their research. The students developed the
questions they needed to answer about each
animal and worked with the Library Media
Specialist and classroom teacher to create the
rubric by which they were graded. Click

rubric.
Bibliographic Format & Copyright
Third graders are
capable of being responsible and ethical users
of information. Part of this
responsibility is giving credit where credit is
due. Cobb County schools use the MLA style
as the basis for all format and citation
questions.
Using the MLA
format as a guide, Sope Creek uses a modified
version for each grade level.
