Academic Bowl Team -- Four member teams participate in regional and state academic trivia tournaments

Expectations:  Practices Thursdays

When:  Oct; regionals at various times throughout the year; state tournament in late March

GHP (Governor's Honors Program) -- Competitive, highly prestigious state-wide program for gifted/talented sophomores and juniors. Finalists in academics, fine arts, and career-technology attend state-funded 6-week summer session at Valdosta State University
Sponsor: Joyce Taaffe (Academics and school coordinator); Frank Pruet (Fine Arts); Patty Morgan (Career/Technology)
Expectations: Intense preparation Sep.-Oct.; School, county, and state levels of interviews/auditions; Results announced April 1.
Cost: None to nominees (state-funded)
When: Departmental inverviews - Sep.; school interviews - Oct.; county competition - Nov.; state competition - Jan. to Feb.; actual program - six weeks in summer.
How to join: Information meeting in Sep., teacher nominations required within 1 week of meeting
Background Req.: Open to outstanding, well-rounded sophomores and juniors; Demonstrated ability in subject area.
Teacher recommendation required: Teacher nomination in field of competition
Parent Involvement.: Commitment to allowing child to attend the full 6-weeks program. Transportation to interviews, to/from Valdosta for winners.

Odyssey of the Mind -- Team problem solving competition

Expectations: If you are placed on a team, you are expected to remain
a part of the team for the entire school year. Team members may not be
replaced once the team list is submitted. Weekly meetings after school
and participation at two competitions.

Wheeler Literary Magazine -- For students interested in creative writing (short stories, poems, narratives, etc.), creative photography, artwork, and design.

Expectations: Weekly meetings (during deadlines) in room 002, offered as a third block class. ALL SUBMISSIONS WELCOME.
Cost: No cost to join, but all staff members are expected to sell subscriptions and advertising to pay for the cost of producing the literary magazine.
