Requirements For Home Study Program
(O.C.G.A. 20-2-690 ET ESQ.)

EVERY PARENT, GUARDIAN, OR OTHER PERSON RESIDING WITHIN THIS STATE HAVING CONTROL OR CHARGE OF ANY CHILD OR CHILDREN BETWEEN THEIR SIXTH AND SIXTEENTH BIRTHDAYS SHALL ENROLL AND SEND SUCH CHILD OR CHILDREN TO A PUBLIC SCHOOL, PRIVATE SCHOOL OR A HOME STUDY PROGRAM.

Parents or Guardians must annually submit to the superintendent of the local school district in which the program is located a Declaration of Intent to Utilize a Home Study program by September 1 or within 30 days after a program is established. The local school superintendent or designee* will provide a form upon request for this purpose to be returned to that office.

The Declaration must include the names and ages of the students, the address where the program is located, the dates of the school year.

Parents or Guardians may teach only their own children in the Home Study program provided the teaching parent or guardian possesses at least a high school diploma or a general educational development equivalency diploma, but the parents or guardians may employ a tutor who holds at least a baccalaureate college degree to teach such children.

The Home Study program must include, but is not limited to: instruction in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies and science.

The school year must include the equivalent of 180 days of at least 4.5 (four and one half) hours of instruction per day unless the child is physically unable to comply with this requirements.

Monthly attendance reports must be sent to the local superintendent at the end of each month. The local school superintendent or designee will, upon request, provide the reporting forms.

Students in Home Study programs shall be subject to an appropriate nationally standardized testing program administered in consultation with a person trained in the administration and interpretation of norm-referenced tests. The student must be evaluated at least every three years beginning at the end of the third grade. Records of such tests shall be retained.

The instructor shall write an annual progress assessment report in each required subject area for each student. These reports shall be retained for at least three years.

Enrollment in the Home Study Program

The process of enrolling a child in the Home Study program is as follows: For someone just moving into the Cobb County School District please call the Home Study office at (770) 426-3349 and leave your name and address as designated on the voice menu. A packet including the Declaration of Intent and attendance sheets will be sent to you.

If you are registering a child for the first time in school please come to the Home Study office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 6997 Keene Street, Kennesaw, GA 30144 to fill out the Declaration of Intent (Click here for directions).

If you are registering a child who is currently enrolled in a Cobb County school, please come to the Home Study office between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and fill out the Declaration of Intent. Your Declaration will be stamped "received" and copied. You will then take this copy back to the school your child has been attending so he/she can be officially withdrawn.


Withdrawal From The Home Study Program

If you wish to withdraw your student from the Home Study program, fill out the pink withdrawal form that is included in the Home Study packet. If you no longer have the withdrawal form, please send a letter which includes your name, your child's name, the date of withdrawal is effective, and why you are withdrawing, for example, you are moving out of the Cobb County School District, if you are enrolling your child in a school, or if your child is 16 years old.


Directions to Home Study Office

Take Interstate 75 North to the Barrett Parkway exit. At the bottom of the exit ramp you will turn left. Stay on Barrett Parkway for approximately one mile. At the intersection of Barrett Parkway and Highway 41 you will turn right and head north for approximately two miles (five traffic lights). You will then turn right on Kennesaw Due West Road. After about a quarter of a mile, Kennesaw Due West Road curves to the left and the name changes to Summers Street. Approximately two blocks past this curve you will see Keene Street on the left. Turn left onto Keene Street and you will see the Martha J. Moore Educational Services Center ahead. The Home Study office is located in room 207.
